I'm trying to make a lion cake for my brother/nephews baby shower. I am using coconut for the mane. I am not a "cake decorator". And coconut seems a lot easier then me figuring out these icing tips! lol haha I have already experimented a little bit. And my DD who is 5 was NOT impressed. lol She told me I needed to go to the zoo and look at the lions, that the colors I used were not right! hahaha
Any way, I should get to the question. Has any one dyed their coconut before toasting it? I want it to be toasted, cause I like the flavor and texture better toasted. But, would like it to be darker then the golden color I get with just toasting, I am thinking about dying it orange. But, I'm not sure if it will just burn when I try to toast it then. *sigh* Any one else ever try?

Yep I have and it's easier than you'd think! Take 1 cup coconut, put it in a ziploc bag, mix a few drops food coloring with 1 tsp. water. Put the colored water in the bag and shake to coat evenly. I have never toasted it, but I've heard that people have done it with no problems. Good luck!

Thanks gals.
Yes, I know it's easy to dye the coconut, I've done it before. Just wondering how dyed coconut will toast up, if it will burn once dyed?
I love the site of cakes! I want to make a lot of them, especially the girraffe and elephant, and well a lot of them! too cute!
