Hi all!
Has anyone else made the calendar bags from the MJ's book?
I did a couple to play with.
Being a pack rat, I have a few old calendars to do this with.
Whatcha think?
It was fun.

Karen, those are great! I made them for all of my brideswomen back in '04 and filled them with homemade bath salts and things. I had a heck of a time making them (I'm not so great with my sewing machine...give me knitting needles and I'll knit you a sweater, but my sewing machine doesn't produce quite as easily with these hands!), the nylon thread almost drove me batty. But I persisted and the girls swore that they loved them. They did all look cute together (I bought a bunch of calendars in January at clearance prices. Got ones to "match" their personalities!)
Fun project! I've been saving a few calendars since to make some more, you're making me want to get started again. Thanks for sharing!

I just love them, too! Those are on my "project list," and I'm so happy to see your wonderful results - I just know your friends will love them. One can never have enough lovely bags! Did you need anything special for your sewing machine - special thread or needle?

I only had tan thread, my nylon thread was cheap and I always had problems with it,so I knew that was out.

Just used reg poly/cotton all-purpose thread.
I used clear contact paper, just as the instructions say.
If I was to use them as a gift bag, I think I would just stitch the paper together and skip the contact paper.
I'm going to use them as project bags, for my knitting loom etc.

Karen these are beautiful. Kay and I were just discussing them. I thought it would be fun to do sort of a scrapbook kinda one. I want to use one for football games so I will print up some football pictures (8x10) and then add stuff like team emblem and school name, maybe some stuff from last years program. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for sharing, I am even more inspired to get to work on these right away!

Oh my gosh...I think for Teacher appreciation week these would be cute with a class picture and assorted pictures of things that happened during the year. (can you tell I am a room mom again??) I am working with a man teacher this year..but even men need totes, right? I could put cookies in it too. This won't be until May but I can be taking pictures to use at the class parties and things up until then!!!

Ok so I have been inspired. 2 hours on a Saturday afternoon and voiala.....
Oh what a hit this is. Imagine for baby showers, bridal showers. I have a bunch on order from people tonight already. i will mke some for other "Eagle" moms and then a bunch of farm girl ones. Maybe use some frannie flowers on them. Wouldn't these be great to go to the store with , instead of using "paper or plastic". Thanks for the great idea, Mary Jane.

Beth that is absolutely fabulous! You did such a great job on the pictures and the bag. I was at Joann's today looking at heavier thread cause it was on sale 50% off. I couldn't remember what kind you said you got. I was looking at machine quilting, topstitching, etc. HELP! My husband has files full of advertising from vintage magazines. I'm going to dig through it and see what I can come up with.

BOY I can see where this project can get really big, Of course I will be buying one from someone, but the ideas are pretty much endless, A farm girl one with sunflowers and aprons sounds perfect to me.

Margie, the instructions are in MaryJane's book on page 254-255 and also in back issue of the magazine/catalog called Shoulder to the Wheel on page 112.
I've been thinking...
what about putting a closure on top?
maybe just a snap or a button and loop...hummmm...
Might even think about a shoulder strap....
just a thought...

Thanks for the info Karin, I new the directions were someplace, now I don't have to get out all my MJ stuff and look for it. Not sure if I will be able to make a bag, but will read over the directions and see what I can make of them.

I always loved scrapbooking and so thats where I got the idea. I also thought of one like an old suitcase that is covered with stickers from places you visit. Love the farmgirl idea. I may use my frannie sunflower pictures. Everywhere I went today people commented on how awesome it is. (did the school shopping thing with my 17 yr old daughter) so I was happy to get such nice comments. I will make some and put them on my etsy shop. I would do these for people with their photos, just need to email me the pictures and I can print them up. $20.00 was what i was going to sell them for at the market this October. May make some wintery ones as well. Could make them tall and skinny and use them for wine bottles? How about farmgirl chapter ones? The ideas are endless. thanks for all your kind words.
Kay- its important to get a heavy jean needle and then I used just a heavier thread. The whole thing took a little over 2 hours. Not bad. Careful with the contact paper- ,it will leave bubbles if you don't watch out. Also darker colors show the bubbles more. Don't use glue to hold the scrapp book pictures on- try a glue stick and use very little. I would maybe just do solid sides on the next ones because the folds mess up the pictures.

Whoah! These bags above are excellent! I use MJF's bag all the time to tote my lunch in and everything else. It is so sturdy and water repellant, and cute,. and yours are all just that way too! Love them!

These photos are so lovely!
I have to laugh because I have been saving Mary Engelbreit calendars for 10 years or more. Perfect application! I saw the instructions in Mary Jane's book and went to town - only I didn't quite understand the directions- I actually applied the calendars to denim fabric and made a lined tote bag. It worked out OK, but a few weeks ago I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that the bags are JUST CALENDARS AND CONTACT PAPER!!!! No fabric! Boy when you have your mind set on one thing it just doesn't always wrap around a new idea!
These pictures are so inspiring I am going to have to do a few more.
And then start saving my husband's tractor calendars to do some more next year!
