I attended the Farm Science review yesterday and learned a lot. The weather was just a little bit cold, as there was a chill in the air, and my jeans jacket was just not quite enough. I picked up lots of literature and will be looking through it for quite a while. I'll try and share some of it with you all as time goes on.
I missed the session on coyotes (sad, because I think we have some at our farm in Michigan, a neighbor found two deer in the field) but attended the one on raspberries, the one on goats, and the one on branding your farm products for direct marketing.
They were all quite interesting. Lots of equipment on display, and lots of displays on bio-diesel and E-85, as well as corn seed vendors and fertilizer vendors, but also small farm info and organic grower information. There were thousands of high-school and college-age kids there (not sure if they were there because they want to go into farming or because they got a free pass to get out of school for the day.) I went to the rural electric cooperative tent and had lunch after the ladies demonstrated how to cook with a microwave (and picked up a free cookbook) also picked up a recipe book featuring Ohio Proud products in the Ohio Proud building. I also got a free yardstick and 10% off coupon from TSC, and a visor pocket for documents from the Ohio Oil and Gas Association... The Ohio EPA had a display with free coffee - I picked up free newspapers and magazines, talked to a man about Johnny Appleseed and apple varieties. All in all it was a good trip.
This whole 3-day event is sponsored by the Ohio State University and Cooperative Extension Service and they've been doing it for many years. It has grown into a huge event. Hope next year to have some interest from some other farmgirls! Maybe even a booth!
