A visiting priest officiated the children's Mass at my daughter's school today. During his homily, he said how lucky all the children were that they were born into good families and asked the children to raise their hands if they were thankful for their moms and dads. A few rows in front of me, I saw my (newly adopted) 10 year-old glance backward at me while all the kids around her raised their hands (she did not raise hers).
Anyway, tonight while I was tucking her into bed she mentioned the priest's comments. She said she didn't feel lucky being born into the family she was born into. "But I'm glad to be in this family now," she said, "You're my fourth mom, and you're the best one I've had so far." (She was removed from her birth mother's home, then her paternal grandmother's home, and then her aunt's home, and we adopted her from foster care.)
Such a weird statement that I never really considered before..."the best mom I've had so far." Moms should just be permanent, you know?

That is so sad. It just breaks my heart that there are children that are like her. I think of my own granddaughters who's mother (my own daughter) has basically abandoned them. I cry alot thinking that she will not be there to help them with the little things in their lives. And the big things too. And it makes me mad more than anything. That other things are more important than a child you gave birth to. I can't even imagine not being there for my kids. I don't know what happened to my daughter. But I try all I can to be there for my granddaughters now. They are both upstairs right now. They are here for the weekend. We get them every other weekend.
I hope you are the last mother she has. She deserves a good loving family. And I am sure she has that now. A permanent family. Just love her all you can. One day she will raise her hand.

He the priest asked the wrong question and by not raising her hand she answered correctly for her. WOW how inciteful for a 10 year old. Makes one feel bad that she knows her bio relatives where not the greatest but sure does a heart good to know she now knows she is in a good place and appreciates it. Just keep loving her and she will grow up knowing she is loved by the "best"mom...ever!!!!

Jessie, that little girl is blessed to have you in her life. Just keep on loving her & showing her that this is her family now and for always, no matter what.

It is a sad but also beautiful story. I am glad she has you and your family and that she understands what she has. What a good daughter you have and hopefully she won't add on the " so far" for much longer.
