I do believe that if I slipped and fell and became unconscience outside that I would be totally fine. I can see why all these guys who work outside and have Carhart jackets and overalls on look like they are fine out in below zero weather. Because they are. There is nothing going to get in through a Carhart jacket or overalls. Nothing! I am sweating by the time I am done out there. From the top of my head to my toes. I am SO thankful for all these things. I just hope everyone who has to go out in the early morning or late evening has a nice warm Carhart jacket and a nice knit wool hat anmd thermol underware on. Pure warmth and comfort.

Thanks, Kris. There's a Carhart store close to our farm and I've been wondering about stopping in. I refuse to wear 'girlie' thermals, b/c they are useless in real cold conditions. I've been lucky enough to find some nice old men's small thermals in thrift stores. But I'd love to treat myself to new duds. Especially overalls.

You sure need some with all you have to do. I could not believe how warm that jacket is. I love it. It's my hubby's but not anymore! And it's just right too because the sleeves are a little too long so they cover my hands. I hate wearing gloves so they keep my hands warm too. I have men's thermols too. With the cute flap up front. Go getcha some, you'll be so glad you did.

I have a pair of the Carhart quilted overalls and LOVE them. They keep me warm and don't restrict movement, AND I can thermo -regulate and not overheat. A must if you sling bales of hay or muck any kind of animal stall. They are also great for when it snows. Rare for central NC, but good as a just in case
Muck Boots too! LOVE them. I insist on the men's 16" up to my knees. I wear a size 7 which translates to a women's 8 . These are so comfortable I sometimes forget and end up wearing them all day just to keep my feet warm. Pair them with Birkenstock inserts for added arch support, and I'm ultra comfey. |

I don't have farm animals to go out and feed, but I do love to be outside. I am always wrapped up in fleece. I am cold natured. I don't mind being cold, but I want to be dressed for it.
I love thermals, too. Stay warm ladies.

I've been eyeing the Carhartt overalls and stuff at Tractor Supply. This is also a good time of year to check Academy for thermals. I got some clearance priced last year around this time.

I love the Carhart clothing, BUT I hate that most of their stuff is NOT made in the USA. I think that stinks. So I will not buy any of their things. All about personal choice I know. But to me, it is just a small piece of the bigger picture...I vote with my dollars.

I have a Carhartt jacket and a vest. I love them. They are very warm. I also have some insulated pants with full leg zippers. I think they are Key brand but they look like Carhartt's. I wore them regularly when I was flagging with flannel-lined jeans and silk long underwear. I also had rain pants if I needed them. Sometimes I could barely bend my leg enough to get in a two-wheel drive pickup! I learned right away to unzip at least knee-high when I got in anywhere warm. Otherwise the warmth never penetrated. Now I use them to feed if it's icky outside.
As far as thermals--silk and wool can't be beat. Silk is so lightweight and yet warm. And the wool still feels warm even when damp. In western Oregon that is a real consideration.

Miss Bee, my I make a recommendation? Jockey makes "girlie" long underwear that actually WORKS: brushed viscose. It's soft as feathers on the inside, and it's the only thing that gets me through these Midwest winters!
I do kind of want some Carhardts though since I walk to work, but Man of the House turns pale when I suggest it (he likes it when my pants show off my rear).

DH has been singing the praises of Carhart ever since he worked in Alaska during the winter. I have a Carhart jacket but it's more like a thick hoody. DH has the insulated coveralls and can go out in below zero weather. The other day when he was gone and I had to dig snow with the skid steer and darn near froze myself to the seat, I called him and said I won't be doing that again until I get a pair of the insulated coveralls and some Sorrell type boots!

Where do you get your Jockey thermals, Alyce? I've been a 'thrifter' so long, I only hit a regular retail store once in a very blue moon. Do you order them online?
Loyce - Where do you get your silk and wool ones? I found two cool thermal wool shirts while cleaning out my dad's house. Love them a bunch! I've kept the weirdest things from my dad's house. Stuff most people would discard. Useful hand tools, heavy duty thermals, hoses, old coffee cans of new washers, nuts and bolts, etc.

I am glad to are staying warm Kris.. Carharts the boys would wear but over the years I found they made me sweat too much. I wear silk long johns the I have a wool turtle neck on top, then I have a fleece lined wook shirt and on the bottom I have fleece lined thick jeans and then a mountaineer wind stop jacket. I have a cotton knit skull cap with a winstop ski mask over that - I have water repelant artic gloves and Artic water proof boots. Most times even when it is below -20 I am toasty warm and the moment I get moving I have to make sue I am not too hot. Most of the time with this gear I can spent hours out side with out an issue. What I like about this layering is I can move without feeling like a stay puff marshmellow and what is also great is they all dry quickly as I do not have a dryer... I would suggest looking at artic climbing gear - the coat I have had for 15 years and it wears like iton. I figure it out - it was $180.00 when I purchased it and with the 15 years so far it cost me 12.00 per year - not bad. I also have a icelandic sweater that I wear in the house and also outside and nothing gets thru that and keeps you warm as bug in a rug.
My only issue I have right now is my feet are cold in the house. Tried all kinds of socks and still they are cold. Any suggestions?? I have wool, alpaca, high tech man mades and still my feet are cold. My Oldest has the same issue and even his Ice Climbing sock don't help. We have good circulation and feet are fine except furing the worst part of winter...

I didn't even think about them not being made in America, I thought I heard somewhere that thye were now. So I went to loook in my coat and it's so old all the words are worn off. I know he's had that coat since we got married 33 years ago so maybe they were making then here back in the day. I'll check at Tractor supply next time I'm there too.
Grace, when it's cold here I always wear wool socks and slippers. I have all wood floors so that helps alot.
Janice, wool thermol? Wow, that's like double the warmth. I bet those are nice and toasty. Don't you just love guys who save everything? You just really never know when they will be needed somewhere. We still have lots of metal coffee cans full of things the old guy had here. It's just hard to throw them out.

Carhartt has many insulation levels- so consider how much warmth you want held in for a given jacket! DH has a nice arctic lined jacket that he can't wear unless he's plowing with the tractor or it's single digits without sweating profusely. Very warm! Carhartt is wonderful stuff- I highly recommend it for anyone with farm chores ;)

Miss Bee, not if I can avoid it; I'm allergic to paying full price for anything!  I always shop at outlet stores. The one I shop at is located in a shopping center that offers coupons on a near-constant basis--so I wait until a really good one comes, see if I can get a discount or gift cert. since I'm a rewards club member, see if what I want is on sale/clearance, and THEN go shopping. (My mother said I pinched pennies until Lincoln screamed--and she said that when I was nine!)
*pause* However, right now I see that Jockey.com has stuff marked as low as 70% off--including the long underwear I just told you about. Now might be a good time to go shopping! (For the record, you have outlets near you in Sevierville, TN and a couple in northern AL.)
