Has any one used a machine that takes the air out of the bag and seals it to preserve food for the freezer? Is it worth the cost?

| Sandy, I haven't tried mine yet, but I just got one on sale. A friend of mine has one and loves it. If you go to the Kohls website, they frequently have big sales on these. Mine was $119, with a canister set and free shipping a couple of weeks ago. It was normally around $200. Their sales change every few days it seems, so it pays to check their site frequently, or sign up for emails. |

I know it's not the same, but for those of us without the money to buy the machine...I use quality freezer bags and a straw. Just stick the straw way down into the bottom of the bag with the food. Zip the bag shut all the way to the straw and put your mouth on the end of the straw sticking out. Grab it with your teeth and while you're sucking the air out, pull the straw out until it gets right to the edge with the zipper seal (slowly). Then give it one last suck and pull the straw out while zipping the last little bit (suck hard!). It's not perfect but it works pretty well. I freeze my beans and baked goods this way and they never get freezer burn. It's like those space bags on TV!

Barbara, I sent cookies to my son when he was in Irac with zip lock bags and sucking the air out. Well, 6 months later they were returned to me and although not great they were not bad with a cup of tea!! And I thank the Lord he was home before the cookies!

I love mine. I got a bigger one on sale this year at Meijer for around $30-40. It really does keep things so much fresher and for a longer time if you can afford one. The packaging claims some pretty long keep times. 2-3 years if I remember correctly.

They are a must! We use one to package all our organic veggies up here in the summer. We vacuum pack all our fish and it tastes great! Remember to date your packages and use the oldest first, it's easy to lose track of it in the freezer. Sometimes we forget all the great stuff on the bottom of the freezer!

I love mine (FoodSaver) I got it as a Christmas gift from second son about 5 years ago and use it quite alot this time of year..did alot of corn (on the cob, and cut off too) this past week. I used to always do the ziploc bag and straw trick..and that IS better than NOT taking the air out. I think they are so handy!! The bags are reuable (I won't reuse ones I use for raw meat, but do wash the others and reuse them. I would really recomend these machines and I am not much of a gadget sort of person.
