I use 7th Generation or Ecover for my toilets. We have our own well & septic, so I'm very careful about using homemade or environmentally friendly cleaning products only.
My what has a lot of iron in it and both products do a good job. Sometimes I have to add a little Bar Keepers friend in the bowl before scrubbing. Good luck finding a product that works for you.

We've got super hard water also. I have given up on scrubbing every day. Currently I am using baking soda and vinegar to do all of the drains and I put it in the toilet as well--works pretty good but doesn't get everything out. I've done some reading on using citric acid to clean hard water stains, I have yet to get off it and get some to try though.

I also have hard water, and I also use vinegar and baking soda...

honestly, thing only thing I have found to get the hard water stains off is using a pumice stone. I do it as often as I see the ring start to return. It does get it off and it gets quicker as long as I keep up with it. Not a quick fix I know but it is what works. I had been using "The Works" brand though it really doesn't get the stains off either. I am using up what I have left of it but I would prefer something not laden with chemicals as I have been burnt by a splatter of this so I definitely want to find something safer.

how do you use the vinegar and baking soda? Just pour some in or do you measure it out or what?

I have soft water, but still get pretty bad rust stains. I also use Borax. I just let it soak for awhile, then scrub. Sometimes I will put vinegar in the rinse water just to give it a good final rinse. |

I just pour some in; I'm bad about not measuring stuff like that. I pour it til it looks about right for the job.

Probably not environmentally friendly, but "Iron Out" works miracles on hard water stains. We had to use it on our laundry when I lived in the college dorms.

I'm just using a good old fashioned toilet brush with the plastic bristles, Lori. I think the key is to let the Borax sit for awhile. I usually leave it for a hour or two, then scrub.
