Everyone has a different skill or talent and there are quite a few of us here who are crafty, and I was wondering if anyone would like to get together to start an online Christmas bazaar.

We could make things to trade or sell, and share our talents...and maybe get our Christmas shopping done at the same time.

Anyone interested?

Sounds interesting! I was thinking of something very similiar. I had been looking over my many treasures, wondering if anyone would trade me. I was thinking of trading for Christmas gifts.

I love trades, so whatever you all decide is fine with me, but I must add that my craft talents do not live up to what I have seen here, so my trades might be of the garage sale, cookbook, old linen variety.

For those that think they can't make something you could always find supplies that those that do make stuff might want to trade for, just a thought, I always like supplies you would laugh if you saw my sewing room it is more a storage room and I sew in my front room.

Well, for example, one way it could be set up is like this - We would start a topic called FarmGirl Christmas Bazaar and each person would announce what items they have for trade or sale and it would be first come, first serve for those who want to get that item... depending on what you have available for trade. The earlier we start this, the more items we can trade/sell.

The items could be anything from photographs to handmade xmas cards or stationery sets (that you make on the computer) to aprons or sewn items, crocheted or knitted items, dolls, wooden toys, etc...

It could be a trade for wool from your sheep/goats, or for some other craft type supply, like feathers or blown chicken or goose eggs...

You could do soaps, tea and coffee mixes, homemade books/journals, scrapbooks, jewelry, or more... Decorated candy jars, personalized wooden signs (painted or done with a saw), painted wooden spoons, a gift basket of items - there are so MANY possibilities and I'd be glad to give suggestions for anyone who wants to make something and can't think of what to do.

It'd be pretty much up to each person to decide how much they can do in the time we have til Christmas, and once a trade is initiated, the two people would negotiate privately about the details of the trade or sale, including colors, sizes, items for trade or amount of the sale and the date that the item is needed by.

I'm not sure about regulations about baked goods or jams/jellies or salsas, but maybe someone who sells those could tell us.

I have always made most of my gifts and you would be surprised what another person might find interesting or appealing.

I was just thinking, if anyone is concerned about coordination, we could have one person be the "coordinator" and that person could keep track of what was being traded by whom and for what trades/$$. The involved parties would be responsible for sending the details of the trade to the coordinator. Not sure what help that would give, but it might be a way to keep track of it all.

If we start it pretty soon, that would allow those folks who have more complicated projects to get started, and those who are busy can jump in when they are free.

I think we should also allow folks to request items, in case there is someone who can/wants to make that item for them.

I'll offer my services to be coordinator. My email is lucyandmoose@hotmail.com, and I'll start off with my list of offerings and wants...

OFFERING: Handmade journals, stationery/cards, beaded jewelry, simple rag dolls, monster dolls (for boys or tomboys), loom knit hats or scarves, knit, crocheted or felted handbags, crocheted shawls (limited designs), crocheted baby items, cat toys (felt mice, crocheted balls, ribbon toys, cat or small dog pillows - I have a design for a felt mouse that is a sure winner!)

I also have tons of patterns if someone wants something and can't find a pattern for it. Maybe I can make it for you.

I can also offer to type up a personalized cookbook, or create a collage of family photos, or even a calendar. I have a plastic comb binding machine so I can bind small books, if you have one you want to write/put together.

SEEKING: Most of the items I will have trouble doing are for teenaged boys (9-15) and adult men - anything that is wildlife related, esp. photography of hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, bears, raccoons, deer etc... or knitted socks, small farm gadgets (like homemade tools), carvings, a cowboy baby quilt - other male oriented gift suggestions welcome!

The boys' favorite college mascot is the VA TECH Hokie, so photos or items with turkeys would work too...

I would also like a kitchen apron for doing dishes.

Natural Soaps and related products are also good items for me.

Seeds are also BIG in my family... so unusual or heirloom seeds, herb seeds, etc... would be a nice gift as well.

It might be helpful to also post this idea to the Marketplace topic. There are so many talented farmgirl's who make and sell lovely things. They might be intersted in participating.

An excellent idea - I have to run right now, but I'll post it on the other thread later this afternoon, unless someone else wants to copy the details and post it themselves... I just have to go to a meeting right now...

I would love to have a Farmgirl Bazzar to shop for Christmas. Last year I ordered as much as I could from our farmgirls. It helped me and my friends were delighted with their gifts.

I will just go ahead and post what I have on hand now. I'm not sure exactly how this will be ran but from experience with trading before you list items that you have and list a "barter price" of what you want. That way if someone wants $10 worth of your stuff you try to find $10 worth from their list. Not sure if that is how this will be but I don't see another way.
I have:
Sun Feather "Farmer's Market" 8 oz. bottle of Adirondack Balsam body and hair shampoo. Smells just like pine...excellent for a gift or to use yourself in December! $5

Sun Feather Rice Milk Facial Scrub, 4 oz. Asking $5

Crabtree and Evelyn Naturals Botanical and Mineral Body Mist (Black tea, vetiver, and sugarcane). Retail $20, asking $10

Onya's Organics Lip balm(regular) 1/4oz. Retail $19 (overpriced, I say), asking $6

Onya's Organics Body cream, balancing lavender. 4 oz. Retails for above $25, asking $9

Amlavi Sandalwood body lotion (for oily skin). 12 oz. $8

Amlavi all natural floral soap bar 1 oz. $1.50

Amlavi all natural chocolate soap bar 1 oz. $1.50

Bubble Shack Earth and Rosemary bar of soap (large chunk) $5

Bubble Shack Holy Peppermint bar of soap (large chunk) $5

These are all new and in packaging.

Magazines that I have:
"Countryside" July/August 2006 $2.50
"Countryside" May/June 2006 $2.50
"Countryside" Sept./Oct. 2006 $2.00 (front cover is somewhat torn)
"Backwoods Home" May/June 2005 $3
"Backwoods Home" Sept./Oct. 2006 $2.50 (front cover is torn)
"Mothering" July/August 2006 $3

Looking for aprons, children's toys, vintage looking items, new towels (for bath or kitchen), men's items, or make an offer with what you have. babys_mama1@yahoo.com

This sounds great! I would be interested. I sew things as well as knit. I also make jams, candies and cranberry sauces, but I'm not sure about the "rules" for edibles.

This sounds like a great idea, and thanks to bluewrenn for offering to be our coordinator.
I'm on the same team as Nancy Jo and Sillyfoulks (no craft talent) but I can certainly purchase and send supplies needed in exchange for handmade gifts.

Unless or until we have a formal coordinator process set up, I will check out offerings and respond to that person by email to see what I can barter in exchange.

I do have somewhat of a tiny talent ... I like to write poetry. Something I do for special occasions is a Name Poem for a new baby, graduate, special person, etc. where I spell the person's name down the left side and use each letter to start a sentence about that person. I would need the person's name and some history about them to incorporate into the poem. If anyone is interested, let me know. This could be for anytime of year. I've done them for wedding anniversaries and memorials as well. I usually print them out on decorative paper and frame them.

I have no idea if there is any market for this, but it does become a very personal gift. It is not something I can whip out in a day or so, and I was waiting to get more involved with this as a home business when I retire, but figured I might as well throw the idea out to you farmgirls and see if it is well-received or not.

Shyly,

Jo

I have some piece of vintage lenins, mostly with needle work, if anyone is interested. Some are in great shape, where as others, have some damage.

I also have some vintage jewelry, mostly clasp or screw back earings. They might be useful to someone for doodads to decorate with.

I also have bought an old book recently that has wonderful pictures of American scenery. I bought it for the pictures of California. I would be willing to trade some of the pictures. There are 300 all together, there are pictures of The Grand Canyon, and Muir Glacier in Alaska, and Pike's Peak in Colorado. There are so many pictures, they range in size and are all in black and white. There itself book is in terrible shape but most of the pictures are still in good shape, and great for framing. The books copywrite is 1894, and contains some great pictures of indians, miners, and just life at that time. If you are looking for a particular subject let me know.

I am leaving for vacation soon, but once I return I will try to get some pictures of what I have to trade.

Right now, on my list are things like soaps and candles. But if you are interested in something I have, let me know what you have, maybe we can work something out.

Hey Jo,
No need to be shy about that talent girlfriend!
Sounds like a wonderful talent.
I have seen the personalized poems before and they look so nice.
Do tell a little more about them. What do you usually charge for a piece? And do you send them out framed or does the customer need to frame them?I'm sure there is a niche for them. You might want to try advertising this in little baby clothing stores, children's clothing stores/boutiques. If you have stationery stores around your area or even florists and gift shops. Ask if you can leave a small business card or brochure...and maybe a framed sample. And hey..don't be shy...it could wind up being a bit of pocket money for you.
Best of wishes!
~Tina

Thanks for the encouragement, Tina! I have been writing these for several years and giving them as gifts, and have done an occasional one for a friend or two, but haven't taken the plunge to offer this on a larger scale - it is something that I hope to do in a couple of years when I have more time. I've given them framed and not framed, depending upon the situation. I don't quite know what they would be worth; have to think through the time spent, costs of paper/frame and postage, I suppose.

There are a few I have done for local law enforcement support organizations; they might be generic enough to use for others in the same field of work. Hmmmm...now you've got me thinking!

I have been trying to figure out the best way to do the bazaar... This is what I propose... We will have a thread where people can list the things that they have for sale or for trade. ALL transactions should be done privately by direct email to the person offering the items. Or vice versa if someone is looking for something particular and wants to post a request.

Keep it very simple - no long lists please - and if someone is interested, then talk about prices or trades in the emails.

If the thread gets too large, or we start to take up too much space, we'll have to try something else. I have some web site space that I pay for each month that isn't being used at all, but I don't know how to create a storefront with multiple sellers. We'd have to set it up as a webpage with plain jane listings, and any transactions would still have to be done privately by emails.
