I haven't bought a clothing pattern in a loooong time! I nearly fainted today when I went to pick up a pattern for a Fall blazer. The price? 15.95! Luckily, JoAnne's has 40% off everyday on Simplicity brand patterns. I'm afraid I'm getting cheaper every day. Rhonda

I agree - I never buy new patterns unless there is some sort of special on. If I wait long enough, some patterns here are sold for buy 1, get 2 free (must be at the end of season). I buy a lot of patterns from the op shop (thrift store). They are normally only 15 or 20 cents and not even cut into yet. I guess people buy them and never get round to making them. I'm getting cheaper too - I think you must just become more aware of value. Best wishes with the sewing, Jayne |

Not sure but I was thinking that JoAnne's has Simplicity Patterns on sale starting tomorrow, the 25th through Sunday for .99 or 1.99? Cheryl |

I remember the first pattern I bought in junior high cost my mom $1.50 and she thought THAT was expensive!! I went to Hancock Fabrics last week and bought 10 McCall's patterns for .99 each. That's the kind of sale I long for!!!

I'm so glad that you said this, Rhonda, because I thought I was crazy! I went to buy a pattern for the flannel pants I made for my husband back in June and I was amazed at the prices. $11.95! I've been wondering how it's actually cost-effective for anyone to make their own clothes. As a knitter, I sure understand all of the good things about making your own stuff - the quality is much better than something from the Gap or Old Navy that was made in China! - but...handmade things can cost so much just for the supplies!
I just got my Mom's sewing box (she NEVER sews anymore) and was surprised to find old patterns in there marked $0.75. That's right - seventy-five cents! She was horrified when I told her what I paid recently... (You can buy a pair of flannel pants at Target for $7.99 almost any day and here I go making them for $20+ with pattern and fabric!!)

It used to be cheaper to sew....but unless you hit a great sale, you're right, you can buy some things cheaper! I am going to JoAnn's today for material....I'll let you know how much I spent! I have a 50% off coupon for one cut of material. I think everyone will be getting the same patterned pillowcases this year for Christmas! XO |

I have a list of all the patterns I like, organized by compnay, and then when they go on sale for 1 or less.. I buy all of them... :-) You can see the simplicity patterns online at simplicity.com Also, there are cheaper patterns out there... My local walmart has a whole section of $2 patterns... great for basics like pants, etc.

YOu can often get free patterns by asking for them on trading groups or recycling groups like freecycle.
Shop the sales when they are $1.99 or less.
If looking for kids' patterns, offer to trade with someone whose kids have grown bigger...
Often you can find lots of patterns on ebay for next to nothing.

Well, glad I'm not the only one who thought pattern prices are crazy! I guess jumped the gun & bought the day before the sale! Thanks Cheryl! ;) LOL Anyway...I saw a jacket I particularly liked, the style was a bit unusual, so I suppose I can live with it. I usually only sew things that would normally be too expensive to purchase, like a jacket or fancy dress. Otherwise, you ladies are right, you can do better at Target or Old Navy for basics! Great info on where to get patterns for less, as usual ladies! Thanks for sharing! Rhonda

I'm going to Jo-Anns. Thanks for reminding me about the sale. I too keep a running list of patterns I want and wait for the dollar sale.
Wal-Mart has simplicity and mcall's half off all the time too. I have 3 days off from woek this week. Think I'll sew:)

Well girls, the nearest Jo-Ann's is a thirty minute drive for me. Probably cost me more in gas than it will save me! LOL Good thing I only sew my own clothing ocassionally these days. You are all such smart, thrifty shoppers though! Way to go! Rhonda

I think you can order from Jo-Ann's online. Once you sign up you will get coupons in your email for free shipping or various specials that they constantly run. I believe the prices on the patterns are the same as at the store, so if they have the $1.99 pattern sale it should also be online.

I hate to mention this but Simplicity, McCalls (and New Look?) patterns are 1/2price at WalMart ALL THE TIME! Not as good as thrift or a swap but when you want to make that jacket or whatever, atleast you've cut the pattern price in half. Leaves you a little more money to splurge on fabric somewhere else! Ooops! Sorry Teddi---missed your post along the same lines, happy sewing! with a happy heart |
