I had some time to kill on my lunch hour, after wolfing down my coneydogs (a Friday tradition every payday) so I walked across the street to the Newport St. Vincent Depaul store, which is, essentially a closet--of AMAZINGNESS!!!!
My spoils? A really awesome 1950's era red Christmas tablecloth, hardly used, but not "so" Christmasy that I can't keep it out all year. Gold balls, white snow covered cottages on a cherry red background. ROCKS.
A pottery baking dish made by Hall Pottery for Westinghouse ovens from the 1940's. I have 2 of the loaf dishes that belonged to my Great Aunt and use them almost weekly, so for a buck, a casserole dish is a total find!
A really terrible 60's era cardigan sweater that you would see in an Annette Funicello movie, that my husband will ADORE.
And the best out of all of that? TWO royal blue metal disc sleds made by Flexible Flyer with the original old labels on them. $5.00 a piece and totally worth it. I did, however, feel really silly walking out onto the street with 2 snow sleds when the sun is shining, the sky is cerulean and it's 57 degrees, but hey, it's gotta snow at some point in my lifetime!

You hit the jackpot! I can just see that cardigan. LOL Marly

Oh, it's hideous, Marly--my husband will love it. I told him about and he said, "will it go with the blue paisley shirt I'm wearing to work tonight?" It will, certainly, but I'd like to wash it up first!
The sleds, though, the sleds! I know they're a nightmare for the tailbone, but buddy will they fly! Now, just for some snow!

OMG! I remember those metallic sleds! We had one when I was a kid and I remember loving them! If they are like those they not only slide down the snow really fast but you get to spinning in them so you've got double your fun! Great finds!

Now watch, Audrey, we won't have a flake of snow this season! That's alright--they're steel, and they'll last forever! I remember an older brother of my friend having one when I was really small and I remember being afraid to go down with him and all his ginormous football buddies piled on top of it. But it looked exhilirating!
We have a perfect hill for sledding in our backyard, but now, we just need the wintry mix!

Great finds! Good for you. I'd love to see the tablecloth. Sounds very nice.
Hope you get some snow. Hope I get some snow... Its 58 degrees and sunny here. I had to go to town and was passed by 10 or so guys on motorcycles. You don't see that often around here in January... They gotta be lovin' it though.

I'll take some pictures this weekend, Lorraine--the tablecloth is so pretty --really 50's with the whole snow covered cottage and gold balls, and the print. Just really kitschy and cool. Original brand tag is still intact.
Yeah, I guess you don't see too many bikers riding around in January in Illinois, do you!? My Aunt lives in Rockford and she's always snowed in for months by this time.

The tablecloth sounds very pretty. I love 50s kitchy stuff. Looking forward to the photo.
We are having unusually warm weather. We've had a dusting of snow - maybe twice in December - but it melted right away. I guess we'll enjoy it while we have it. And look forward to "real" winter weather for sledding and snow angels. Have fun!

Jonni, I. Love. St. Vinnies!! They have the best stuff! It's like an antique shop with second hand prices. I don't think it's not possible to find at least one good find every time you go. Can't wait to see the pictures, and i'm dying to see the tablecloth. Sounds like the kind i've been looking for!

Come on snow! (I've got this image in my head of a snowglobe being shaken like a pair of dice at a craps game.) |

Man - I am envious - I love St. Vincents and you totally scored Jonni - I love that feeling!! The St. Vincents in Spokane all shut down a couple years ago - I used to find the best stuff there but then they turned into an E-bay clearinghouse and then said they weren't getting enough revenue to keep going - weird - I visit in other cities every chance I get.....
