I have been making my own powdered laundry soap for a little while & love it, but sometimes would like a little scent. I noticed some of the recipes have essential oils. Do you just add a few drops of the oil in the washer with the soap or are you actually mixing it with your dry ingredients when you make the soap? Wouldn't it get clumpy? T

I don't use scented oils. I like the smell of simply CLEAN. Now when I'm around someone wearing clothes that have been washed in Tide (the detergent I used to use) I'm almost sickened by the smell.

I was thinking some lavender oil or something. Just for a change...I understand about the strong detergent smell. I notice it more now too.

Yes you can add some essential oil to the mix if you want. I wouldn't add it to the water because really the soap is going to be washing the scent away so it is purely for your enjoyment as you are adding the soap to the water. I usually recommed about 20 drops per batch but that of course depends on the strength of the essential oil and your preference.

Thanks Alee...I think I will give it a try with my next batch for something different.

I failed to mention that you might try fragranced vinegar in your liquid fabric softener dispenser. I make fragranced vinegar with basil or citrus peels, etc. and use that in my washer's softener dispenser. I wonder if you could use your essential oils to scent vinegar and then use that. Let us know what works.

Amy - here's my easy, no need to measure recipe:
One 55 oz box of Washing Soda
One 76 oz box of Borax
2 lbs of Baking Soda
5 bars of Fels Naptha Soap (important that it's finely grated)

Stir it all up in a large container. Use 1 Tablespoon for a regular load - 2 Tablespoons for a dirty/large load.

Hope you like it. I follow with vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser in the washing machine.
