Oh my goodness, I got a scare at morning feeding today!
One of my yearling heifers remained bedded down, asleep as everyone else came up for their hay. She didn't move a muscle for the 5 minutes it took me to dish out the hay, and just as I thought "Oh no, she's dead, I need to get in there!" and had my hand on the gate latch- She lifted her head, stood up and meandered over to get some food. Next time she pulls this I won't be so concerned!
Do you have any hard sleepers?

She just likes to sleep late! I would have been concerned as you were. I'm the only hard sleeper around this house. LOL Marly

My mule can be a hard sleeper sometimes. There have been a few summer mornings when I came out and put her fly mask on while she was curled up on the ground. Granted, during weekdays I'm out there at 4:30 a.m....too early for man or beast!

Natalie, my goats are like that. Scares me every time. And the other day I went down the road to check on my 2 bucks that are with a few does and some wethers. I got there and they all ran over to me except Jessie, one of the does. She didn't move a muscle. Nothing. And I called her several times. I just knew she was dead. So I headed down there and she lifted her head. Darn goat! Ya just never know. I'm glad your little calf is ok.

Marly- That used to be me, too! Until I had this baby LOL! Now I'm up before the sun and I just wait for Jr to be done eating and I head on out when the sun joins the party!
Paula- 4:30 AM is god-awful early. I'm with your mule on that one ;)
I was a little earlier than usual, but with the goats hollering and the chickens clucking and roos crowing away, I just figured she would wake up and know it was breakfast time! Usually I don't hay the yaks in the morning because they have the round bale feeder, but today was the bi-weekly new bale day- so maybe that's why she wasn't too concerned with the commotion. She is our smartest animal on the place.
I'm glad she's okay, too, Kris!

HAHA!! I've got a pair of ferrets I've had for quite a few years now, but when my first one was little more than a baby, she slept SO soundly that when I took her out to play with her she didn't wake up!! She was warm, had a heartbeat (we checked and she STILL didn't stir!) We had our shoes on and were just about to the front door headed to the vet hospital with her in my hands when she snapped her head up awake so much as to say: "Oh hey guyz!! where we goin???"
So word to the wise... Ferrets play hard, they sleep hard. :D
