Well, though this is the Reading Room forum and TV is a no-no, I didn't know where else to put this!

Has anyone been watching Downton Abbey on PBS? Just finished watching the last episode of season 1 (I missed it the first time around) and season 2 begins next week. I love it! The English countryside, the fashion, oh the fashion! The clothing, the jewelry, and just the whole "properness" of everyday life. Dressing for dinner vs. drive-through for a burger, garden parties vs. super bowl parties.

If you've been watching it, I'd love to know your thoughts!

Sat enthralled for 2 hours last night. It has everything--love story, gorgeous clothes, adventure, and a touch of comedy. Did I mention gorgeous fashion?

I'm glad there are other fans out there!

2 hours of Downton Abbey went by in a blink! I am normally early-to-bed, early-to-rise, but staying up for this PBS Masterpiece Theatre is well worth it! I'm so excited to see how the love story of Mr Bates and Anna plays out!

I am with all of you-- A "hooked" Downton Abby fan! The 2 hour kick off of the new season was just terrific. Gosh, I am so looking forward to next week. If you are reading this and have not seen this PBS series, check it out. You won't be disappointed!

@Amie, me too...my husband "snorts" from in the kitchen while working on his model airplanes when I'm watching it on Sunday evening. I love it--and I'm so in love with the characters, especially the eldest daughter, Mary and the valet, Bates. Awesome. The only thing I'm having trouble with now and again is the voice of the mother--I realize she's an American heiress but does she have to sound so "California valley"? At times she her voice makes her seem vapid, though her character is not.

I'm very much looking forward to this Sunday--seems that there is a mystery in their midst, murder, treachery, love, yahoo!

I live for this and Doc Martin--my husband can never understand why I laugh out loud at Doc Martin...

Hello Darlene. I, too, love Downton Abbey and am enjoying the second season. Elizabeth McGovern is a wonderful actress. I saw her years ago at the premiere of Bedroom Window. She was tall, very slim and wore horn-rimmed glasses and a simple black, sleeveless dress (It was the dead of winter and I was wearing a coat and freezing). She was not at all glamorous and seemed a little shy. I believe she downplayed her beauty on purpose. As to Downton Abbey books, Barnes and Noble has a huge selection of books about the series.

Everyone I know has been talking about it but I just haven't had time to watch it! Everytime I sit down and start watching a movie I get ants in my pants and have to go do something, haha. Maybe one of these days I will need to take some time off from my overall busyness and veg out with a good movie, blanket and cup of hot tea or coffee!!!

I think my all time favorite though is "Are You Being Served" We finally got caught up on Downton and DH will tell me every Sunday "guess what's coming on in a little bit" LOL. We've even set the DVR to make sure we don't miss it!

Rachel,
"Are You Being Served" is truly a favorite of ours as well! "Keeping Up Appearances" keeps me totally entertained.
And, I don't know if any of you have ever watched the antics of those three little old men on "Last Of The Summer Wine" but they are pretty entertaining too!!

Hey Sharon,
How are you feeling? Been wondering and praying?

And, we really like Larkrise to Candleford as well . . . try to catch it every week.

Mrs. Bates is dead . . . but is Mr. Bates going to be suspect for her death? I wonder if that is what's in the works? Some interesting developments in last nights episode of "Downton Abbey".

Just found this thread. Count me in as another Downton Abbey fan - as well as BBC/PBS in general. I love all the sitcoms too. My favorites are As Time Goes By and The Vicar of Dibley. My husband and I usually splurge at Christmas and buy a BBC series - this year we bought To The Manor Born, The 25th Anniversary Edition. I love Penelope Keith... And yes, who doesn't love Hyacinth BUCKET... Well, I could go on and on... Its my favorite TV entertainment.

To incorporate books in this thread, I highly recommend Cranford (both the book and the BBC series). And if you like a light mystery, try the Victorian mystery series by Robin Paige (pen name of Susan Wittig-Albert and her husband). The books are set in England at the turn of the century and incorporate real historical characters in with fiction. Very well done. And for a non-mystery British series, I really like Miss Read's series - both of them (Thrush Green and Fairacre). If you like the Mitford books, you'll like these.

If you love Downton Abbey as much as I do (I left a neighbor's Superbowl Party at half-time Sunday night to watch it), you must read Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey by the Countess of Carnarvon. It's non-fiction that reads like a novel and is the inspiration for the PBS series. You'll recognize many details and learn new things: I had forgotten the real-life Lord Carnarvon discovered the tomb of King Tut with Howard Carter. As my husband always reminds me--I was born in the wrong century and the wrong social class! Dianne in the Hudson Valley
