Jayne - Count me in too - Randi is in NJ but I think we are too far to get together. Not many farmgals in the Garden State. This is a wonderful idea. Keep me informed okay?

Hi all- hope you had a great holiday season! I was looking through my list of farmgirls from last year and wondered how many people are still participating. Jayne you have moved too? I hope you are settled. Is there an updated list?
Has everyone signed up to be part of the farmgirl sisterhood yet? I just signed up today. Are people still posting on yahoo? I think my link to what is being posted there has been severed somehow and would love to reconnect if Jayne or whoever is the moderator would send me the link again.
Loved the handspun Cyndi. I have a couple of balls of handspun here that I am contemplating at the moment. Is there anything going on in the group right now? Kathy mentioned something about being counted in and I would love to know what it is! Thanks! Noelle

Noelle,
What is 'farmgirl sisterhood'? I'm so behind on my forums that I've only been linking to this thread.

Okay - just went and read about being part of the farmgirl sisterhood. Cute idea, but I'm too frugal (read CHEAP) to shell out $20 a year plus $10 a patch. I'm sure it will be loads of fun, just too pricey for my humble homestead.

I love knitting with handspun wool yarn! Over the Christmas break I spun just shy of 1,100 yards of double ply yarns - so 2,200 yards of single, then double plyed them!

Downloaded pics of some of the yarn I spun up over the holidays ...

This is from (http://www.thesheepshedstudio.com/Wooltoprovings.html)Carol Lee's #1 wool roving. A deeper burgandy than what shows on her page. Paul fell in love with it immediately and asked for a toque. There is 366 yards of double ply, about 16 wpi:

This is 481 yards, double ply of about 25 wpi. I carded about 50/50 corriedale with the blue from Carol Lee's #1 wool roving. The pictures don't show the true color, which is more a purple than a blue. These will be knitted into socks for me:

A bulkier weight, heavy worsted double ply, about 220 yards. It is Carol Lee's olive green #1 roving carded with Carol's black mill ends (that she always throws in for free). The bits of yellow, orange, red are randomly placed soy silk:

Found a cool way to determine what size needle to use when working with handspun yarns. Double the yarn, then place flat behind a needle guage. When the hole for a needle is the same size as the doubled yarn, it is a good fit for the yarn.

Thanks Tina! Thanks also for the Christmas Card.

Your blog spot is wonderful! I started one a year ago and haven't added anything to it since last summer, or maybe spring. I just can't keep up!! Maybe if I put my spinning wheel away??? (no, then I'll just pick up my needles or hooks or loom!!)

Cyndi the yarn is beautiful! Thanks for the tip about the needle size for handspun, I will try it. I typically spin in the summer (outside when my youngest is playing- he is 4) and then I knit with it in the winter. I have not been brave enough to weave with it. What kind of loom (or looms) do you use? I have a Schacht 8 harness and a rigid heddle- a table loom for workshops. I have been so bad about weaving since my youngest was born, but I am determined to get something on the loom again this winter.
The sisterhood sounded like a good way for me to get motivated this year- but you are right about the cost of the patches. I guess I will see how it goes the first year and then decide about the next later!

Anybody know how Jayne is doing in her new place?

I just finally posted something online myself on squidoo- I don't know when I will update it, but I hope to use it as blog, project motivator and knitting helper for others. It is here: http://www.squidoo.com/knitternoelle would love feedback if anyone visits!

Noelle,
Looms - I started with a simple rectangular frame loom for twining rugs, then a triangular loom, both built by my DH.

I need to insert a little story here .... One day about 3 years ago, I got a call from DH saying he bought me a big loom at an estate sale for only $7. I was so excited (and wondering what kind of shape it would be in. Got home from work and went to look at the 'big loom'. turned out to be a spanking new, still in the box .... 60" LeClerc flying shuttle beater with an endfeed flying shuttle. Okay - not a loom, but an add on piece worth over $800 new. I sold it for $400 and found a wonderful Harrisville-Design T/6 (4 harness, 6 treddle, 36" weaving width) on a homesteading barter board for only $225 (plus shipping). Unfortunately, it still sits in the box waiting for room.

In the mean time, I bought a Spears rigid heddle & a 25" Schacht RH and have fiddled with them a bit. A couple months ago I got a 4 harness table loom - a J loom (looks very similar to the LeClerc Dorothy) Waiting for DH to build me a table for these two looms (and the picker and drum carder), then I can probably have room to set up the H-D

Off to take a look at your squidoo

Cyndi-
That is fantastic about your trade in for a loom. Mine is also a 36" weaving width, which is easier to fit in most homes in the long run. If you want to make something large like a blanket, you should learn doubleweave- a technique that I am working to learn. It will allow you to double the width of a piece on a smaller loom.

I still like my rigid heddle for portability and simplicity. I just wish I had two extra hands and more hours in the day. I am so impressed with your web site. What a wonderful dream life you live! I have been trying to get my family moved to a farm for a number of years, but now that the bigger kids are in high school it will be put off for a least a few. I do have a big garden (raised bed) and also dry my herbs etc. How fun it is to meet people who enjoy the home arts/farm arts on this site!

Would you or anyone else like to do a recipe exchange where we all make recipe cards for however many people (i.e. 12 copies of one recipe)- decorate them and mail them to those that want to participate? I think that might be fun! If anyone is interested in the exchange we could update the mailing list and pick a due date for mailing! We could do an annual exhange and start a recipe box called Farflung Farmgirl Grub (or something silly) just for our farmgirl chapter! Anybody think that would be fun? Noelle

Noelle,
It would be fun, but knowing me, I'd probably type up the derned recipe on word, print the correct number of copies and call it good. I'm not up much for paper art! If anyone that wants to participate wouldn't mind that, then I'm in!

We can pick a deadline of Valentines day or the end of January or something if people are busy. That would give us time to update the list too. I think any submission (typed or decorated) would be fine. Maybe we could say "Feel free to send a 4x6 decorated copy of the recipe or a plain typed copy" and then if people want to put them in a recipe box themselves they can rewrite it. I just thought it might be fun to get something in other people's handwriting because I know that I love to look through old recipe boxes. The handwriting itself lends character sometimes! But I would love it if any person who wanted to could send one. Another option-we could always just send typed recipes and people could put them in sleeves in binders. 81/2x11 paper and they could be decorated or not- or just emailed too. I wouldn't mind making a sheet for the binder cover saying "Farflung Farmgirls- Great Grub!" or something like that. What do you guys think would be more fun?

I think a card size that easily fits into a regular size envelope would be alot easier for folks...just my opinion.

yes. most recipe cards that you get are 3 by 5 size. So I think that would work.

Sounds good-
So if you would like to join in the recipe exchange it will entail sending either a 3x5 handwritten recipe card (decorated or not)or a regular typed recipe sheet (that they can put on a recipe card themselves) to each person in the exchange. To Join: send me an email (Noelle) at knit_by_the_moonlight@yahoo.com with your mailing address and info and I will let everyone know how many recipes to print up and have mailed to arrive by Valentines Day (wouldn't it be fun to get mail for Valentines day that is farmgirl related!) Sooo I will let everyone know how many to make by January 14th so we can have almost a month to print or decorate and mail.
If you really want to get to know each other better here are some questions that would be great to include with your recipe: Where did you get the recipe (and what year), what occasion do you use it for, and do you have any memories that are special related to it. If you want to include those with your name and where you live that might fun. If you just want to send a recipe with your name and location that is okay too! I am going to start a recipe box just for the group called Farflung Farmgirl Great Grub! In the future we can call out for specific types of recipes to add to it if people enjoy it. Thanks! Noelle

So email me with your info if you are in no later than January 14th, next monday. Noelle

Hi again-
I had to update my email with MJF today and I don't know if anybody had a hard time sending me names. I got Tina's and Cheryl's but if anybody else sent in for the recipe exchange through MJF please send again. It will go to knit_by_the_moonlight email now instead of my other one! Thanks Noelle

Hey all-
There have only been 3 sign ups for the recipe exchange so far-- so I think I will extend the deadline to see if others are just not checking posting right now. Let's try another week for sign up! If we don't get any takers then maybe we will try later. Message board has been pretty quiet. Hope everyone is well! Noelle
