So starting on January 1, My DH and I will be off FB. The reasoning behind it:
1. Everything you put up can be hacked, given to the gov't without your permission/knowledge, or made public through any number of the "Privacy Policy" changes.
2. Do I really need to know what that one guy who sat 3 seats behind me in a Math class 9 years ago is up to? No. Yay for him for getting married, but I don't have time to sit here and read about it for hours. It has no impact on my life. I don't need to know that stuff.
3. I should be focusing on my real life, not what others choose to update the world on: "I just got to STARBUCKS Heck YAHHH" "Insert bumper sticker saying here" "OMG I got a puppy!" No one cares.
I have never been one for "new year's resolutions" or anything, but I think this is going to be a good change for my family. I joined FB back in the day when only those with college email addresses were allowed. I kinda wish that was still the case. With 13 year olds (and younger) on there now, it's just the new myspace.
Anyone else getting off Facebook? Or making some other change for the New year?

I have hidden alot of the people on my "friends" list, unless they are family or someone I really want to hear about. Swearing is an automatic bye-bye. I do keep it so I can keep up on my young adult kids. Teenagers were the reason I got it in the first place. But I am definitely cutting down!!!
My change for the New Year... No dairy. Yes. It's time for complete abstinence.

I enjoy facebook because my whole family is on it, and with our crazy schedules often time that is how I find out what is going on.
That being said I can see how it can eat up your whole day. I have gone through periods of Facebook overload. In fact I took a hiatus from it at the beginning of this semester and I can't say it hurt me any. It's definitly a personal decision.
I do unsubscribe from people who spam a lot of pictures or those who use inappropriate language. I do like that you can unsubscribe from someone to control your page better. :)

Unfortunately its one of the few forums I can keep track of my grown kids on. My son who is currently stationed in Afghanistan messages me on FB so it's a way I can communicate with him since they don't have phones. It also allows me to keep up with family in other states. I've got friends that have set up 2 different accounts - one for their family & close frineds and one for all the other schoolmates etc. That way they just claim they're never on FB to post if questioned. A hassle but an option. I also use it to keep track of some of my blogs. That being said, there are days I consider erasing my account.

I like Facebook. It's a great way for me to keep in touch with my friends and family who are scattered all over the world. You don't have to worry about what time it is where they live, you can just post and respond to news at your own convenience. I love hearing about puppies and other good news! And like Winona I have been reunited with several very dear friends on FB that I had lost touch with over the years. So I see it as a very positive thing. Like Angie says, if someone posts something offensive or otherwise annoys me with frequent posts that don't contain useful information (like "I'm at Starbucks") I will move them further down or off my friend list. I like FB because I can be as present as I choose to or not to be - sometimes I will take a break for a few days or a week if I'm busy or just need quiet time. I work with a lot of exchange students and have learned that if you want to keep in touch with the younger generation you have to do so at their level. If anything I plan to learn to use FB more effectively to communicate with my friends over the next year. But I know it isn't for everyone so I can certainly understand those who don't care for it so much. Each person knows what is best for them and I will honor their choice.

I have to agree...I like facebook as it allows me to keep up with people. However I only "friend" a few close friends and family. It fits into my crazy schedule, sometimes I don't get home until late, and its to late to actually call someone on the phone.

I like hearing about new puppies within reason... I don't like hearing about a new puppy once every 4 months from the same person who just 're-homed' the last one for whatever reason. Guess I should've clarified that one, sorry!
I'm not opposed to the family/old friend aspect of Facebook- I'm opposed to the creepiness of how it knows way too much.
I'll give an example: Facebook regularly suggests people to add as friends. Usually it's because you have many mutual friends, so logic would allow that you could very well know them, too. That's not so bad. What's bad is when FB suggests I add someone with no mutual friends, who just so happens to be the father of a friend I took to Prom in 2006. I have zero contact/mention of said prom date anywhere on FB. He's not on my friend list. How did FB come up with that connection?? That was the moment I realized they know too much and it's time to get out of dodge.

Uhm, well I'll assume that's for me being a negative nelly. If that's the case, please know that I'm not a negative person. Those status update examples just really got to me.
There's nothing wrong with getting a puppy. There is something very wrong with rotating through them like my sister in law does 3+ times annually. Not to mention the kittens, rabbits, etc. All in her apartment that doesn't allow animals (which is how she can rationalize rehoming to other people).

I like FB. I keep up with family. I find it amusing when someone from high school wants to friend me now, when back in school they made it very obvious they couldn't stand me and vice versa. I have joined several groups that have provided me with useful information and life skills in a very short amount of time which I couldn't have done otherwise. I am careful about what I post, though it could be found out with the right amount of digging. I don't post my school or work info. I don't post anything I wouldn't want Jesus to read or see. If you're worried about the government finding out your secrets, just follow who Mark Zuckerberg follows, meets with, gives money to. If you think the government's main source of finding out about you is FB, then you don't know about shadow programs, of which FB would be a minor piece of the puzzle in locating where you are and what you are doing. I applaud anyone doing something beneficial for their life that will improve the quality of it. Be it joining FB or unjoining it, starting an exercise program, eating organic, or going back to school, etc.

For me, choosing to get off FB was more of an ethical thing. Many of my nieces and nephews are on it and I didn't want them to feel embarrassed or self conscious that their Aunt was reading about their party, dating, etc. habits. Irregardless of the fact that they 'friended' me or that I 'friended' them - I still didn't want to be privy of their going on's. I'd rather not know even though they were well aware of who was viewing their posts.
Also, I spend waaaaay too much time on a computer as it is - so eliminating another time hog was an easy decision considering the above. Getting on to post on FB led me from one page to another and to another and so on..... Not complaining, it was my own personal experience and not everyone will feel as I do. Blogging is as far as it goes as I feel I have more control over who 'visits.'
That said, I can understand why it fills the need to keep up to date with family members who are far and near, and I don't belittle them for it.
