Ok.. so this is going to sound extremely "un-farmgirlish" of me, but I just can abslutely not get motivated to finish my cross stitch project for my badge. It is really sad cuz all it is is a small 4inch by 4inch counted cross stich christmas ornament :( I love to sew with my machine but needlework is just NOT my thing. I seriously lack the patience and concentration it takes. Does anyone else ever have this problem?

Oh yes, and I have a lot of orphan projects but taking a cue from the Flylady....set a timer for a short period of time like 15 minutes and tell yourself that you only have to work on it for that amount of time and no more! Make sure when the timer goes off, you STOP. In a short amount of days, you will have it done and have your badge!!! If 15 minutes is too long, try 7 LOL

I understand where you are coming from. It might have to do with my problem. I have a hard time at home sitting still in one chair for any period of time. However, I can sew for hours. The difference for me is that sewing is a very "active" activity...I'm up and down, in and out of my chair, sewing, then ironing, then cutting, etc. Maybe that is what you are struggling with too.

The timer sounds like a great idea. I'm having a hard time with my 4th sushi scarf. It's like hump day! I have 3 more scarves to go for Christmas..I'll try the timer.

Don't feel discouraged....
I use to be a avid cross stitcher,,,, but in the last 1/2doz years my close-up vision has gotten so horrible, that I have to either wear 3.00X readers or else my 2.75 and wear my hanging magnifyer around my neck and I usually have to sit by my Ott-lite....(ditto for reading paperbacks) and then I can only stitch for about 15-20min before my eyes go wonkie on me! uugghhh!
I have a 'white Calla Lily' on black aida cloth that Is still unfinished & I started it 2 years ago!...for me stitching on black aidia cloth and anything under 14ct is greuling.... Thank goodness for 11ct lol!
I have a big rubbermaid type container full of cross stitch kits and about a doz...started/almost finihed cross stitch projects in my x-stitch tote....I will get them done.... it will just take me a lot longer then in my early days when I could sit & stitch for hours.
The "timer" method is actually a good idea to get me motivated again....

This sounds so much like me! I have a big tote full of cross stitch patterns and an even bigger one full of kits. Plus I think i have around 5 in different stages of work LOL. Ihave to agree though, dark fabrics are hard to work on. I like the idea of 15 minutes though. I made a rule for my scrapbooking, I only allow myself to do a two page spread at a time, this way I don't get overwhelmed with photos. |

Grace - try back lighting when working on black aidia cloth. If the light is coming from the back, it will shine through the holes and makes it easier to find them. I have trouble working on black too and that really helped me.

oh, Sheri, thanx for the tip about the back lighting.
I have to laugh,,, I started 'collecting' cross stitch kits before I had retired,,,
as part of my "retirment fund" lol! and now I can barely work on them! oh my!

I struggle with finishing cross stitch and embroidery projects. I love, love, love to crochet. I can sit and do that for hours-even the thread crochet. I don't know if it just forms faster, so I get that reinforcement sooner, or if it's the rhythm of it. Sometimes, I can get absorbed in a cross stitch project, but it seems never to last long enough to finish one. I'll have to try the timer, too! I like flylady, and have tried the timer with things around the house, but not with needlework. I'll have to give that a try.

Thank you all for the replies.. I will definately try the timer thing too and see if that helps. I also know what yall mean about starting a bunch of different projects at once! I suppose needle work is just going to be one of those thing I will never really be great at. Amberly - I just learned to crochet.. I actually made a scarf for my daughter this week and think it is something I will really enjoy!

I can swear by the timer trick. DS Bubba has attention issues with certain subjects for homeschool, and the timer trick really helped him get over his hump on some things.
Hang in there! You'll git'r done!
