Greetings!
My son brought home two CHICKENS! from a 4H project :). Now we are trying to figure out if they may be roosters (which we can't keep :(..) They are 9 weeks old, the black one is a silver laced wyandotte, and the light one is a buff orpington (we believe). I am posting pics everywhere in the hope to get some feedback.
Any chicken sexers out there?? :)

Gosh, chicken sexing is so tough sometimes! Last time we butchered there was one roo who escaped until the very last minute. He was an odd breed we'd never had before and I thought he was a hen the whole time. As soon as he thought butchering was done, he came out of that coop strutting his stuff like you wouldn't believe! He was then butchered and it was revealed that yes indeed he was a Roo. :)
I would have to see them compared to other chickens same breed, same age to know for sure. I'd guess that Buff as a Roo but don't take my word for it. It's been awhile since I had 9 wk old chickens. :)

do they duck when you go to pick them up or do they look up at you first then run away?...do either go down like they are going to be mated?....Since both have really red wattles its a tough one to decide what they are...but my buff girls had really red wattles also....You have a few months I suppose to wait & see......:)...Michele'

i say they are hens. just my thought. they are young it seems. so they will change some. i bet they are girls small comb.

The Silver laced Wyandotte has such pretty coloring. I hope it is a hen!!
My girls didn't start ducking until they were about ready to lay eggs. That was one of the ways I could tell which ones were laying and which ones weren't...besides the size and development of the comb. One of the poor girls seems to duck when I just look at her...I keep telling her she doesn't have to do that, but she still does.

Oh my :)....
I am trying to find pictures of samee age ones to compare. I am pretty sure Snowball (the buff) is a hen...but Pepper?

They both duck, then run, or just sit :). Pepper just sits, but Snowball is the tamer one once I have her. They BOTH like to perch and sit on me......

Thanks Paula..she is getting to be really pretty (I keep saying SHE :)..). She does duck when I go to pick her up, or she will just sit and let me get her. The both bicker when being picked up, but settle and perch on my arm immediately :). Then they poop.....

the wyandotte is a hen, the lace patterns show that. The buff is a little harder to say, my orphingtons all have really big combs, most of the hens fall off to one side. Does the buff have any saddle feathers? The pic i posted show a black copper maran both his hackle feathers and saddle feathers are copper colored. if your buff is getting long thin feathers in those area then it would be a rooster, otherwise a hen
hope that they are both hens, if not maybe you can find a local farmer who will sell you another for a buddy

The buff's feathers are still pretty fat and short. Actually, she is a bit scruffy looking, with soft "baby" like feathers still popping up. I don't see any long, thin ones at this point. She is getting a little bit of a comb.

yes he is, he was our primary breeder last year for our black copper marans. He looks pretty but the eggs the ladys lay are better yet.
