I'm going to a beginner knitting a hat class tomorrow and can't seem to find an easy beginner hat pattern. I mean really EASY. I don't follow patterns at all so it needs to be like a kid could do it. Does anyone have one I could copy? Thanks.

Hi Kristin -
This is a pretty easy pattern - just knit and purl's to make a farrow ribbing. Just be sure you end every row with "knit 1" and you should be fine.
Knit Hat (very stretchy - fits a toddler through adult)
Worsted weight yarn
Size 10 needles (or smaller if you knit loose like I do!!)
Cast on 69 stitches
Pattern row: Knit 3, purl 1 across (end row with knit 1)
Continue this pattern on every row until piece measures about 9”.
Decrease row (right side facing you): knit 2 together across
Purl entire next row.
Repeat the decrease row & the purl row alternately until 9 stitches are left on the needle (remember, the decrease row is always on the front side).
Cut yarn leaving about 3 foot tail; thread yarn on large eye sewing needle and draw through all 9 stitched left on the knitting needle. Pull up tight and sew down back seam.
Note: If you want to fold up the bottom 2” for a hem, you will need to sew the last 2” of the seam on the alternate side.

Kris, are you knitting on circular needles or straight?
The most basic is this one:
It's a rolled brim because you're simply knitting (and each knit round on circular needles creates a stockinette fabric, no need to knit 1 row, purl 1 row) and the rolled brim is a result of the stockinette.

She is going to be teaching on the circular needles. I cannot wrap my brain around how those work til I see it done. I found some at a yard sale. And she wanted me to get double pointed needles too. I have no idea. She did say I should find a pattern using the stockinette stitch. I'll check out your pattern too. Thanks!

Once you get your fingers to "work" with the circulars, you'll be very happy you learned. It makes a hat go in "snap" no time. The double pointed needles are for the decreasing stitches, when you're near the finishing of your hat. Some people knit hats on double pointed needles, but this causes me to cuss, so I refrain.
With the pattern I've posted, it's as simple as casting on your stitches and knitting to the length of the hat, then switching over to double points to bind off.
It's going to feel weird at first, I'm not going to deny it, but remember to try to loosen your grip on the circular needles--your work isn't "going" to fall off and that's really fabulous--you don't have to keep "checking" your stitches on the needles.

I am making a hat! I had a hard time at the beginning but I am going good now. Of course there are some mistakes but I will keep going and keep this one for me. It's really fun and I think I'll be at 9" pretty soon. Then I will learn how to start decreasing and then be done. Thank you both for the patterns.

Congrats Kris! I just learned to knit myself and was wondering how to make a really simple hat so I appreciate these patterns as well. I have never knit on circular needles, but as soon as I get some I will try. Crocheting is still so much easier for me so I always give up and do that...but you give me reason to believe that if I just stick with the knitting I can do it! Will you post pictures when you have it done? :)

Amy, it was really frustrating for me at first using those needles. The first few rows were horrible. But once I got going and could actually see what I was doing, it is really easy now. And you just keep knitting round and round. Really cool. She used the pattern that Luanne gave me because she thought it would be easier for just starting out. But I will use Jonni's pattern next. If you can crochet, you can knit. When I was first being taught to knit, that lady used the way with the yarn over your left index finger like you're crocheting. I could NOT do that. Although it is so much easier to do, especially if you are changing the stich every few stiches. The way I do it is wrap the yarn around with my right hand. I can't remember if that is Continental or French? Is it even French or something else? Someone else may know. But I am loving it! I already have so many hats planned to make now. I better get busy. And Amy, I hope you take a lesson or just google how to knit. There are SO many really good videos. And you can stop and go back as many times as you need too. Good luck! And just do it!
