Hi Kellie. That is so neat that you are living in a tent. And in Idaho no less. I hope your little wood stove keeps you nice and toasty this winter. It looks really nice and cozy in there. You'll be cooking on it I guess? And I just love your blog. Can't wait to read all about your winter in the tent. Are you going to be building a house or just stay in the tent? And is it just you?
We are heating with wood now. We had gas logs but couldn't afford the propane last year so took them out and started burning wood. We are looking for a good big cast iron wood stove that I can cook on too. What I really want is a Vermont Bun oven. That's my dream stove. It has the wood stove on top which is really nice so no having to bend over to put wood in. And an oven to bake bread or roast chickens. And the top to make coffee or heat water. It's not too bad as far as new stoves are these days. About $2500. I really really want one.

Oh you lucky devil! What a beauty AND you live in a tent? sweet! I am so jealous! I've always wanted to live in a tent or yurt at least for a while to enjoy the experience =)
I think the most important thing would be, and especially living in a tent, to avoid chimney fires.
I know that wiki isn't reliable on many things, but I think that it explains it adequately

I nearly caught my mom and dad in laws house on fire with one, so I am just offering a caution
Anyway, I live just out side of Moscow, where in N.Idaho are you? It would be nice to visit sometime =)

I envy you the stove. We heated with wood for 10 years (supplemented with central heat when really needed) and loved it. Here, we don't even have a place to install one. Sure was handy when we had power outages on a regular basis.

We bought a fireplace insert (Earth Stove) about a month ago. LOVE IT. I don't ever want to go w/o my woodstove ever again. In fact, I want to add a secondary one to the lower level of our home. About tips...well, I guess the main thing is just to use well-seasoned wood, watch for creosote buildup in your pipes there, and just learn how much air you allow to keep your fire going. I'm not any help. Lol. :0)

I am sorry but to me it looks like a fire waiting to happen. I double pipe through the tent is good but still will get hot. The side walls can also get to hot and start a fire I have had wood stoves for many years and still HATE them.

Wow! In N. Idaho? All winter? Wow, you are one hearty soul. Love the stove! I've heated with wood for years and years, and I cook on it too. Please do be careful with the canvas so close to the walls. Should keep you snuggly cozy warm as long as you are careful. And it'll be a good one to cook on too!

@ Kris: Yes, it's just me in the tent at this point. My family lives close by, and we are hoping to build our dream log home someday in the (near) future=) I've also heard of the Vermont Bun oven - sounds wonderful!
@ Annika: Thanks for the link! I was terrified of a chimney fire at first, but I've gotten the hang of how it all works, and couldn't love it more! I'm just south of Sandpoint... would love to meet you someday!
@ palmettogirl: Hehe - I was wondering about that myself;) My brother helped me to make a fly out of a large logging tarp which completely covers the tent, supported by log trusses. If the snow gets too deep, I just pull it off with a push broom. I have seen pictures of wall tents with no fly quite buried in snow, and really don't know how they keep from buckling. =)
@ msdoolittle: Yes, well-seasoned wood, creosote buildup, and learning to regulate airflow were great tips! I've had to figure out each one=) Wet wood = unhappy me;)
@ Diana and oregonatural: I was so worried about the canvas getting too hot, but even when the fire is it's hottest, the canvas is never more than gently warm. And wood stoves sure are a lot of work! =) I've only made tea and heated food on the stove so far, as I eat with my family, but one of these days I'll do a pot of soup:)

I live down in in Florida so this looks like such a fun and amazing challenge and adventure!! I mean, how many people can say that they learned all of the necessary skills to make this their cozy home??? My only experience in a wall tent was Girl Scout summer camp where we all made our home in wall tents at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virgina for 2 long and glorious action packed weeks. They have great memories for me and I believe that living in one for all seasons is probably one of the most intriguing endeavors that I can imagine!!! I think making soup might be pretty easy to make. Right off the top of my head, I am thinking vegetable soup something like this: 1 large can tomatoes, several carrots peeled and sliced, several potatoes washed and chopped, one medium onion chopped fine, several cups water so there is enough liquid, any other veggies of choice, maybe 1-2 cans of beans drained, salt,pepper,and any sort of herbs like dried basil. Then just let it simmer all day until well cooked. I am wondering if this stove might function something like a crockpot cooking on low heat??? If it does not work? Haul it down to the family location and cook on the stove! But I think this might work when it is so cold out and a consistent fire is needed anyway to be able to keep warm. Soup's on at the Wall Tent! Bring your bowl,spoon and something to share!, Give me time to catch a plane-- it is a long trek from here!

Thanks for the update....I am drooling with jealousy as I read your blog etc. The pictures of your wood stove in your wall tent....ugh, just to die for!
May I ask where you got your wall tent? It looks so cozy.Please keep us update on your little piece of paradise!
PS- I gave my girlfriend the Farmgirl button, mirror and felt carrier that I ordered from you for Christmas and she LOVED it!

Kelly taht looks so comfy.When I was growing up.All we had to heat with was a wood stove. On wash day,momma had a wringer washer so it was an all day job. She would set a pot of white northern beans to cook all day on the wood stove .It was so good. Beans soup,veggie soup.
I am 53 now and I still love a wood stove.
When I first married we didnt have a wood stove, and I felt like I was freezing to death. When your used to wood heat nothing else will do. Now 27 years down the road ,we have fireplace with indert and blower and loooooooooooove it.
