OK, so I've decided that I want to sew up some pretty summer skirts for the last few weeks of summer. The kind you can wear with a colorful tee shirt and some sandals and go to the market or the library or wherever. Went to the Simplicity website to scout out patterns, intending to purchase at our fabric store when they have all patterns for 99 cents.
Am I being too picky? I can't seem to find a good pattern. And when did patterns become multi-size in one envelope?? (I'll admit, I haven't sewn anything from a pattern in years.) What's with that??
Help! I need some encouragement -- I can feel myself turning to stone on this project already. Anyone have a fav skirt pattern to recommend? |

I like just simple wrap around skirts ( lava -lava style). Just use rayon fabric measure around your waist multiple by 2 + 8 inches depending on how big of a knot you want make it +12. then cut fabric to that length. Fringe edge about 3 inches at each end seperate in to groups and tie in knots just to secure the fringe from unraveling more. The salvage makes the waist and hem no sewing. Simple to make and wear just wrap around and tie over hip. Can be formal or casual depens on fabric and style of shirt you put with it. My favorite are tye dye, japanes, and baltic ( sp? the wax type patterns with dye) patterns.

I like to make my skirts from a Renaissance/Elizabethan petticoat pattern. I use linen, which has the nicest swing to it when sewn up this way, but I'm sure you could use a light cotton with equal success. It makes a very graceful skirt, and it's easy to adapt to various sizes. Here are the instructions:

Thanks, Sunshine -- Your skirt sounds easy to do, easy to wear . . . I'm just not the wrap skirt kinda gal, I guess -- wore them back in the 60s and had too many oops. But I do like your idea, and your fabrics -- the wax-dye fabric is batik, and I have some lovely sample scraps I purchased at a fabric store that I'm using in crafts. So beautiful, and such a good fabric for summer skirts.
Margie -- Oh, I like that pattern! I may have to sew one up this weekend.
Elizabeth -- I love your idea of a linen skirt -- I just may sew a second skirt this weekend!

it is differnt than the wrap around skirt of the 60's they tend to open up when you dont want them too. This one is the hawaiian style I have about 3 I made at the moment because it wraps around 1 3/4 times it is very hard to open up as more than half of the dress would half to open up. I was out with libby aunt jenny and katedid the herb lady and theutahfarmgirl for a day of antiqueing and that is what I wore with sandels and a tee shirt no problems. The good thing is you can always try one and because there is no sewing the fabric can be used for something else if you don't like it after wearing it once. You can have the flap in front or in back depending on you style if you tye it so the flap is on the back side it is harder for it to open as you are sitting on the part that has that slite possibility.

In answer to your multisize pattern question..... They started this quite awhile ago. It's great for kids. As they grow you don't have to buy more patterns. Especially good for shorts pants and PJ's. As for patterns that are adult size it makes them easier to fit. I'm smaller on top and bigger on bottom. So I buy for the bigger part , but then I can cut the top on a smaller size line. So you can use whatever size to fit the specific area. they are Great!
If you go to the SEW NEWS site there is a free pattern that is in the new mag Sew Simple. It looks easy I'm gonna try it too. Oh yeah, did you find the easy patterns? Each pattern company has a section in the pattern book with easy and cheaper patterns. They are usually under 2.00 and pretty quick to do. Simplicity's are called It's so Easy ans Mc Call's is Stitch and Save. These patterns are usually about 3/4 of the way through the pattern books. Look for the tab. I also like New Look patterns. Again under 2.00. Hope this helps. Enjoy getting back into sewing.

It's been so long since I have been on the forum/chatroom. I love to sew and have been wanting to make myself some new skirts as well. I bought the special issue "Sew Simple" with the intent to make some skirts and the sundress. it looks super easy and quick.
I also bought a pattern from Hancocks of Paducah called Cute Skirts by Favorite Things Pattern Design.
I am stil ltrying to picture how to tie the wrap skirt.

Thanks, Teddie, for the explanation on the multi-sized patterns. Makes sense. I will check out the pattern books for those easy patterns -- probably will find what I'm looking for. If I had a favorite skirt right now, I'd just use it as a pattern . . . but I've been jean'd for so long, I have no skirts!

Sunshine, Hi! I've really enjoyed seeing your skirt, which is beautiful! I tried to leave a comment, but microsoft cut me off, so it probably isn't there. I wondered, is your skirt easy to walk and sit in? It's very graceful, and your instructions easy to follow. I'll try another time to look more at your blog--looks very interesting.

Yes your comment is there I just cut and pasted my answer from the blog to here so you can read it in either spot.
I like them. I wear them to the grocery store, shopping, to my kids, school, around the house while doing chores, to church. I think they are comfortable. Just make sure you make them out of rayon. If they are made out of cotton they are very hard to wear. With cotton they are stiff don't flow, fit, nicely,and rayon has a little give that cotton doesn't to make it easier to tie. The first one I sugest any one make has real long fringe in case you make it too small you should still be able to tie it with the fringe. It can also be used like a shall. This type of thing if you are in a bathing suit can also be a dress like cover up just tie above breasts and below arm pit ( wasn't a nice description wasn't sure how to phase it. Then it is a wrap around dress. I hope that was understandable. Thank you for the comment.

PILLOW CASE SKIRT
update I posted this on my blog too
another real simple skirt pattern
real simple to make 1/2 is done already.
this may sound real weird but you can also use a pillow case as a skirt. Saw it on a blog a while back it was actually cute too. Told my husband I wanted to make one. His responce was funny. Well you have worn weirder things than that.

above is a link so you can see what I mean. Of course you have to be able to fit your hips in a pillow case. This would never work for my mom.
Just think of all the old hand work done on pillow cases it could be real fun. OK I am an art person and weird I know.

It's not weird at all, actually looks great on the model! Seeing you in your wrap skirt, I'm sure you'd look great in this one, too. I think you've gotten your husband "broken in"  Somehow, the idea of my hips fitting into a pillowcase seems like a long shot! Maybe a sheet... However, a tube of cotton jersey, diagonally cut, with a drawstring is what I'm presently wearing--I didn't make it. My Kenmore, age about 30 years doesn't do knits well at all.

Yes, I do use cartridge pleats, especially on my 19th century dresses. I love the look of them. And I'm such a devotee of Tasha Tudor, too.

Sunshine -- I love that pillowcase skirt! I immediately got out a pillowcase and held it up to me . . . hard to 'try on' a pillowcase, by the way. May have to leave that idea to you slim-hipped gals.
Ann and Elizabeth -- Very interesting learning about cartridge pleats. I did a google search and read about how to make them on a couple different sites. Most interesting. |

DUMB SEWER HERE, How do you determine how much elastic to put in a skirt? Do you measure your waste and that is the amount?And when you put the elastic in do you just sew the ends or tack it down all around?

yes you sew the ends together.
Elastic is typically your waist measurement minus 2 - 7 inches depending on how snugg a feel you like. I test it by figuring it out put a pin through it and pin it on my waist to see how it feels then adjust as needed. I hope this helps each person is little differnt on how they like their clothes to feel that is why the differnce.
