I have been thinking a lot about how to display a small part of my husband's key collection (he has thousands...been collecting since he was a kid, people save them for him, and now he's buying them on eBay)
I was thinking that he should select a theme - like car keys from the 30's and 40's, or tractor keys, for example - then, how to display them?
One way I have thought about would be to use the plastic pages with inserts for storing baseball cards, then label the key with an index card and cut it to fit the holder. I could stick the key to the card before sliding it in. This might be OK for the trophy case at work dedicated to hobbies, but probably wouldn't win any prizes at the county fair or look good on the wall in our home.
I also thought about a shadow box with hooks on the back wall, but that might get heavy and bulky.
Any other ideas?

What about resting them in the spaces of a printer's tray? You can find some with varied sized spaces that would hold keys. That would not take care of the thousands that he has, but it would be a start!!

| We have an old spindle, the kind of thing you'd see in an old store to hold receipts, and we put the keys in a stack on the spindle 'nail'. Looks real cool, and you can fan out the keys and see their individual details. Also, I've seen a coffee table made with storage area that is open on the top, and then a glass top is put on -- so you can see the massed collection through the glass. Hard to describe gracefully, but it looks really cool! I think part of the joy of a huge collection is its quantity and its many many variations, and this kind of table really emphasizes those aspects. |

| I have a table exactly like Katie-ell described. We bought the table specifically for my husband's antique lock collection. The table is my favorite display piece ever. I rotate the display for seasonal decorations or collections of my own too so we have something different to enjoy. I lined the drawer with fabric and start filling it with treasures. |

you could also tie them on to a longer piece of fabric scarf with ribbons and create a very unique "swag" piece to drape over a set of sheer curtains.use a long fabric scarf piece.. then tie the ribbons through the keys and "hang" them by looping the ribbon over the fabric..the ribbon will create little puffs in the fabric scarf, then you drape that over top of your sheers as you normally would... you could also simply pin them on to curtains such as a solid color curtain in red, or navy blue, simply safety pin the keys randomly over the curtains. The same can be done on the valances.
I had a friend that had a large collection of vintage brooch pins in flowers and unique designs..she created a valance out of chenille cloth and pinned her brooches to the fabric to display her collection.
