We just got back from our second and final vacation for the summer. We did our usual trip up to the San Juans in Washington State - we do this about every 3 to 4 years. This year we stayed 4 days on Lopez Island, just love it there. But this time we did something a bit different for us, we came back through the Olympic Pennisula and stayed 3 nights at Lake Quinault. We had heard about the lake this last winter and looked into staying at the lodge. But when we checked into it, the lodge was booked. So I started internet surfing and found a place right on the lake called Locharie Resort. It really isn't a resort, but just 6 small cabins on the lake. The earliest one built was in 1926. We stayed in one that was built in 1936. Each cabin is named for mountains in the Olympic range. We stayed in Storm King. 72 steps down to this quaint little two bedroom cabin. DH got the work out of hauling all of our stuff, but the payout was wonderful. I have posted some shots of our cabin and the lake.

There is a scenic drive you can take around the lake from the North Shore to the South, just make sure you have good vehicle because a good part of the road is unpaved and narrow, but I guess in the fall you will see Elk and Deer, we saw none but came across this wonderful waterfall.

We will definitely be going back to this wonderful place.

Such beautiful and cozy pictures!! I love cabins by ponds/lakes! Thank you so much for sharing those pictures with us and I am so glad you had such a wonderful time!

What a beautiful spot- like a little piece of heaven! I can just imagine it in the fall. I'm sure it is exquisite!! Thank you for sharing your pictures.

Anne- we stayed at Quinault earlier this summer! WE stayed in the Angeles cabin, and I fell in love with it. Of all the places we stayed on the two-week trip to Washington state and Oregon, Quinault and Lochaerie were my favs! We also enjoyed hiking in that area and eating dinner at the Rainforest restaurant.
Even though Washington is the entire country away, we hope to go back soon- and especially to Lochaerie!

That is so funny that you stayed in the same place as us and in the cabin just up the steps. When we got there the first thing I thought was this is just the place a farmgirl would stay. Did you get to see the river otters - we did, they swam by our cabin early in the morning - a trio. So cute. We saw geese, wood ducks and lots of fish jumping in the lake. DH took one of the canoes out for an early morning lake trip and we took a short hike to the Kestner Family homestead. It is a beautiful place.

Hi Anne,
What an amazing place. I live in Washington, I want to try and make it out that way this summer, maybe next weekend. I have always wanted to get out that way.
Have you been to Fishermans Bay? They have a great Saturday market with amazing crafts.

Wow! Breathtaking!!! I love the San Juans. My hubby and I went kayaking up there and it's one of those places that I'd love to live someday.

When we went to the San Juans we stayed on Lopez and drove by fisherman's bay everyday on our way to Lopez village for some of Holly B's bakery goodies. The farmer's market is always on a Saturday and we missed it, though I hear it is really great. Apparently they have one on Orcas too. We love going up there every 3 years or so. This stop at Lake Quinault on our way back to Portland was a real treat, DH is already planning the next trip up to the Olympic Pennisula.

Anne- we saw the river otter too. In fact, my silly Husband Dear stood there forever taking videos of it and saying "Do you see it?" I found a perfect stick ont he lakeshore and smuggled it home for my six year old- she wanted a walking stick and now she has one from across the nation.
Did y'all go to Lake Crescent? It's on the northern half of the peninsula, between Forks and Port Angeles. It's worth looking at- beautiful inn (national) and good hiking. I think one of the prettiest waterfalls we saw was there.

We drove by Lake Crescent on our way from Port Townsend to Lake Quinault. I think next trip we will start at Lake Quinault and then work our way up the coast line and end up at Lake Crescent. There is so much to explore in that whole area.

We were amazed at how different the coastline looks from ours. Here, the beach is all sand and seashells. It's flat from the midlands of SC (and NC) clear out to the coast; there are no mountains or even hills. We had to walk down a hill to get to Ruby Beach, then we had to climb over some huge tree trunks to get out to the sandy area. And it was cold! In the 60s! YOu can't find 60s here at a beach until the winter. It was beautiful though, and I pillaged many rocks from Ruby Beach (they have now taken their place on my bathroom counter).

Depends on where you are in Washington and Oregon - prices in both states has gone up quite a bit - I know along the Oregon Coast - land prices are super high and I know on the San Juan Islands in Washington, depending on which Island you are looking at can also be high - especially if you want a view.

Beautiful place. I am an Eastern Washington girl so I enjoy more sun less trees than the San Juans.
Reccomendations for the east side of WA are Banks Lake near Grand Coulee Dam, its manmade and HUGE. The park has RV, tent sites, and a few yurts. It has a nice swimming area, paddle boats and bass and trout fishing. In the evening its less than 10 minutes to the Dam for a very cool laser light show on the side of the Dam. Me and the kids went alone one year and saw the most spectacular lightening storm I have ever seen.
Also Sun Lakes, sort of near Moses Lake is a perfect family "camping" area. Cabins, tent areas, RV area, great swimming and fishing, Snack bar, boat rentals. We took a boat out and found some of the neatest secluded sandy beeches north of Hawaii. We stayed in a cabin all the luxuries of home with a fire pit, BBQ and shady trees with hammocks. Trails for the kids to bike and playgrounds and a mini golf course. The campground even had musical entertainment one year we visited.
Neither place is for roughing it but when you have little ones sometimes roughing it is just too much. Both places were reasonably priced and had supplies if you forget anything.
Hope someone can use the reccomendation.
