He looks exactly like ours...

here is our terrier...

Oh yes lots of stories & that's for next time. I will love to hear your stories Audrey. They are the most loyal companion. He is getting quite old...losing his hearing but he does know my signals. He can't see that well but he is managing. He can't no longer go up the stairs but he still make me laugh so hard.

OMG! He is so cute! I just want to pick him up and sqeeze him! Hobbs was pretty deaf when he went but I think his vision was still good. I was working with him so he could respond to signals but we never really got to use them. I used to have pre-adolesent boys stop me on our walks and say in this manly voice, "cute dog" or "I like your dog". I always was amazed that they would even acknowlege an old lady walking her little dog! Young girls would say he looks just like a teddy bear, which I beleive they do! I see yours has a black spot on his tongue, my Hobbs had one also but I'm not sure I got a picture of it. I realized after he passed that I wished I had taken more pictures of him.

We should start a thread "Cairn stories". I bet your pup has similar characteristics as mine did.

Good boy Hobbs! I love and miss you.

Audrey, tell us the story about how you acquired Hobbs and how he got his name. I haven't ever heard of it before and I just love it.

Audrey that picture of him yawning took me many many attempts with my blackberry phone. He doesn't like people taking pictures of him. Everytime I bring out my camera he keeps on turning his head...look at me and when he see the flashing lights or noise he turn his head. Thank goodness for digital camera because he is sooooo camera shy.

ahhhhh cairn stories...

Yes they do look like a teddy bear. I keep on telling my husband the same thing. When I saw your pictures I want to hold him type too.

Looking forward to hear your stories.

Audrey, I am so very sorry. To lose a pet is a really tough thing. They become part of our lives and family.

Thank you Linda. Although I go hours without crying I still miss my buddy very, very much! DH was looking out the patio door last night and I realized he was thinking of Hobbs. I said the house just doesn't feel right. And he said, no, no it doesn't.

Hobbs' story:

Way back in 1995 we had a horrible year, losing a cat, our last dog and my mother all from April to August. We were in pretty deep mourning and I was in pretty rough shape. That following Easter, I had a spiritual awakening and started to pray again. One of the things I prayed about was for God to bring us to a new dog that we could love and that might help pull me out of my depression. I had wanted a terrier (Wired Haired Fox) since I was a kid and I thought I'd best be getting one before I got too old. The more I looked into that breed, the more I thought it might be more than I could handle but I still wanted a terrier. We then heard about a breed called the Cairn Terrier which was supposed to be the calmest of the terriers. I found out Toto from the Wizard of Oz was a Cairn! And all along I thought Toto was a mutt!

I had to talk DH into it but he finally relented and I started to look for one (no pet store dog for me!). No one had a puppy anywhere near us and I was growing sad thinking I'd never get the puppy I had asked God for. I had decided I wanted a boy and I had already picked out his name: Hobbs. Those who read comic strips back then will remember a popular strip (and still is) Calvin and Hobbs? Hobbs was a rough and tumble tiger and best friend to Calvin. I thought a Scottish Dog and a terrier to boot would sound good with a name like Hobbs.

We finally saw an ad for two male puppies from a private breeder on the Western Slope of Colorado. I called and the lady told me that her husband was going to be visiting his mother in Denver the weekend before Thanksgiving and was bringing them with him. So on Sunday, I dragged a very reluctant DH to this ladies house. DH didn't want a new dog because he still hurt so bad about losing our last dog but he went with me, protesting all the way.

We went into the family room and there were two male cairn puppies and a female bichon. The boys were what is called Wheaton and one had a black muzzle and ear and tail tips. DH bent down and picked that one up and looked at him and then proceded to hold the puppy close to his chest and then looked at the other puppies. I was looking at the other boy and we were talking to the husband of the breeder. After about a half hour I finally went up to DH and said do you mind if I look at this one? He had yet to put the puppy down! He reluctantly released him and I soon found out why. This little boy had already chosen us.

When we had walked in the room, he came up to DH as if to say "Finally! There you are! I've been waiting and waiting so we can go home and I can start my new life. I'm ready." We paid the breeder for our new pup and got his information. He walked out with us to the truck then got in and he never looked back. We got home that evening and fixed nacho cheese dip for dinner. We put a communal bowl of it on a tray by the sofa. We had Hobbs with us on the sofa and the minute the bowl went on the tray, there was our precious boy as if he was say “mmm…dinner! Finally I’m hungry. What it it? This isn’t what I’m used to but it smells good!" We realized he must have been fed with his brother and sister out of a communal bowl and this was normal to him. We stopped and fixed him something that was more appropriate for a puppy and then we all sat down and thanked God for our many blessings and the start of our new life together.

Good boy Hobbs! I love and miss you.

Oh Audrey, that is such a wonderful story! Such cute pictures of Hobbs! I can already tell you that my next dog will be a Cairn Terrier named Hobbs! But, not until after my old Maggie is no longer with me.

If you do get a Cairn and name him Hobbs, please let me know. I'd be tickled pink to think another one is out there giving love and companionship to a very good person! And of course, I'd need pictures! We thought if we were to get a new one, we'd have to name him Calvin but feel free to get two and name your other one Calvin to keep company with your Hobbs!
