Jenny -- we went to a garden center and got their 4 way planting mix. Got 2 yards of it and it cost about $65. Much cheaper than buying all the stuff to mix our own and it is great soil. I'm not sure what the difference is between the SFG books. He probably just updated some stuff -- hopefully his hairdo! I can hardly wait until the plants all start growing and filling. It always looks so pretty! If we can keep the darn cats out of it!

Some of the differences: raised beds, Mel's Mix (don't use existing soil), weed carpet so no more weeds, no pH testing needed. I cannot remember anymore, but if you take a peak at http://www.squarefootgardening.com he lists all the differences. All I know is that when I read the old book, I got so discouraged. I read the new one and am so excited (mainly because how EASY it is).

Did anyone see a picture of Oprah's garden? It looked so beautiful! It looks like her gardener uses SFG! It looked like instead of 4x4 she had 1x8 maybe 2x8 all over the yard. It really was beautiful!

Missy,

Check out Jerry Baker. He has a natural homemade recipe to keep the cats out of the soil where a garden or seeds have been planted. Has some cayenne pepper in it, but I forget what else & it won't hurt them.

Had to post a picture of my gardening area. My SIL put together the long bed for me yesterday and I had the two small ones from last year. We got a half yard of potting mix from the nursery -- it is great! Planted herbs and cucumber starts plus put my tomatoes in large pots. I'll be putting in beans, lettuce, radishes and flowers today.
