Hi I just came acrss a list of 189 old sayings the was written by my Grandmother...she passed away in 1990...so the list is at least 30 years old. Some I had never heard before, that got me thinking...What old wives tales have you heard?

My husband had two sayings that he learned from his mother, that I now find MYSELF saying... If for instance I am questioning one of my children on why they did or didn't do something and they start to reply: "Well,..." I then say.."The well is all wet and your in the middle!" And the second saying applies if the person you are speaking with refers to someone as "she", our response is ALWAYS "Who's 'she'? The cat's mother?" I don't fully understand that one, but it just comes out of my mouth without fail!!
I also would love to see this list!! Let me know if any of my MIL's sayings are on there!!

My mom was pretty superstitious . . . Don't start a project on a Friday. Don't whistle after dark. Don't eat with money on the table. If your hand itches, you are coming into money. If your ear itches, someone is talking about you. If you spill salt, company is coming.
And you never, EVER, put up the yearly batch of "sugo" (spaghetti sauce/ gravy) if anyone was having their "monthly." It would ruin the sauce. A very Italian thing.
When bread was rising on the stove, "the baby is sleeping."
If a mouse was in the house, "we have a visitor."
I guess some of these aren't exactly wives tales, just momisms. She was quite a gal, sure do miss her!

My grandma was a fount of information, some very timely. "Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to no good ends", "Never put into writing what you don't want the whole world to see", "A pregnant woman who steps under the neck of a pregnant mare will carry 11 months, just like the mare." That last one scared me because I did it in her presence, she told me, then I carried an extra two weeks! Also, she was known to take a hatchet and "split" a tornado coming toward her house. My mother witnessed it and the cloud split and two separate funnels passed on each side of the house a few miles away. Also, she always said a mockingbird singing at night means someone is dying closeby or even in the house.
The morning breeze has secrets to tell you. Do not go back to sleep. Rumi |
