My landlords have an old horse trailer and I'm thinking of seeing if they'll sell it to me, no one uses it for anything. So I think with a bit of work it would make a great, secure moveable chicken coop! I'm thinking that it has plenty of room in the storage compartment to store chicken food and equipment, and if I framed in and meshed the open window, as well as made storm shutters for it that it is certainly big enough to house a dozen or so hens.

It isn't used due to the fact that the floor is too un-sound to hold horses any more. But with work it would be a very secure shelter for a bunch of hens. I've had trouble keeping chickens due to so much predator activity in the area. every time I think I've got a secure coop the skunks, roaming neighbor dogs and raccoons prove me wrong So this time, I'd be keeping them in a steel coop, chew/dig through that ya varmints!

I'd be using electric chicken mesh to keep them in any area that I moved them to.

Good idea. Steel is difficult for varmints to get through for sure.

I am having a devil of a time trying to think of which colors to paint it! I'll be painting my own house a soft sage green next spring, I'm considering a similar combo of soft sage-y green with darker green shutters and a big shabby floral print scallop edged awning over the back doors to give the girls a bit of shade from the sun!

just remember, that you will need to put that trailer under a tree in the warm months, cause it will heat up to an oven with the sun beating on it...

Tina, I'll be parking it under some large trees and hoping that during the day the hens will use the underneath of the trailer for shade...I'll probably have to make a daily routine of fishing eggs out from beneath it, but I can live with that for fresh eggs and the company of chickens =)

What a cool idea Annika! I think you may be on to something here as long as the conversion does not cost a bunch of money only to find out the varmits can still get in and attack your hens. If you go with it, please send pics because it sounds like a very useful way to upcycle!!
