My favorite song that tells a story is "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. I love story songs. I also like "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot and "Come Dancing" by the Kinks. Story songs really stir the imagination--it's like watching a movie in my head when I hear a good story song. What's your favorite song that tells a story?

I love a song called "The Highwayman". Many, many people have sung it and its a really old song. I am fond of the Stevie Nicks version... Really sad song, but I love it anyway. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is one of my favorites too and it always gives me a little chill hearing it

When I was a young girl I used to sing a Peter, Paul & Mary song called "Polly Von". Hadn't thought of it in years. Thanks for reminding me. It begins: I shall tell of a hunter whose life was undone...

Haunting tale... "she'd her apron wrapped about her, and he took her for a swan... an lo and alas... it was she - Polly Von."

And I will probably have "Out in the west Texas town of El Paso" floating around in my head tonight!

Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Paul and Mary....even though it's a fairy tale type of song it tells of a little boy growing into manhood and leaving behind childish things. My boys are both grown and I miss their little selves. Thankfully I have my grandson now to take me back to that time. Also Darcy Farrow sung by John Denver. Sad song but his voice is so beautiful. And another is You Are My Sunshine which my grandmother used to play on the piano and sing to us kids. I've no idea who originally published it. It's sad but expresses everyone's fear that they'll lose the love of someone most important to them. Gosh I'm sure I could think of a ton more and the ones posted by the ladies above are great songs too.

We have a two cd set called "Story Songs" and its all old western songs that fit this exact bill! My favorites on that set are "Devil Went Down to Georgia", "Big John", "Harper Valley PTA", "North to Alaska", "Battle of New Orleans", "Carol County Accident", and the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies. (That used to be my ring tone!)

I also like "House Carpenter" and "The Lighthouse" by Nickel Creek. :)

My mom sings a song about "There once lived in Ireland, a wee little man" and that song always made me cry when my mom sang it. OH! I found it!

Oh, there lived in old Ireland, a wee little man,
And he went by the name of a leprechaun.
A fairy shoemaker none other was he
And he had the power of wishes three.

Now, I'm tellin' you sure as the day I was born
'Tis meself that would boldly walk up and say,
"Bless the friends that I love, and the friends that love me,
And the friends of me friends, that's me wishes three!"

I would say "Runnin' Bear" is my favorite. An old country song I think by Johnny Horton. I also like "Country Bumpkin" but I'm not sure who sings it. My girls like "Don't Cry Joni" by Conway Twitty.

Gosh, I love all of those! The only song/stories that I'm really not a fan of are the 1970s CB radio-craze songs, like "Teddy Bear". And then there's the one about the trucker's dog. I just am not a fan of those. Lol.

I love "Big John"! This is a cute thread. Story songs really are great. One my kids really like and my DH too, is Ol Red. It's probably not the most moral story ever told in a song, but its very catchy, and tells of a man who killed his cheating wife, gets sent to prison, and befriends the warden. He is given charge of the warden's dog, and uses a female dog to distract "ol Red" to escape. It's a very clever story at least.;)

I would have to say my favorite story song is "Three Wooden Crosses" by Randy Travis.

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

I remember the Leprechaun song from my voice classes when I was much younger. Thanks for the reminder.

I like a song called Number Nine, about a train wreck and a young man who wills his home to his would-be wife, only to be killed in the wreck.

I also like Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels and American Pie by Don McLean. I love story songs.
