Hi there Farmgals. I'm feeling the need to dive into a really great book. I'm a ridiculously picky reader so its hard for me to get into anything. What I was hoping for was suggestions about something that would be like the Little House Series...I adore those books and the farmgirlishness of them (is that a word?? , all they represent, how things were long ago...but I've read those books several times. I just feel better about life when I read those books...but there's got to be something else out there LIKE them. Any suggestions?

Janet Oke's books are wonderful if you aren't offended by Christian themes.

Janette Oke's books are good especially the Love Comes Softly series. Anyways did you know that there is a series based on Caroline and other family members? Okay so it isn't written by Laura Ingalls of course but it is still good. I have not read all of them before. I also always enjoyed the American girls series with kirsten which is set in the 1800's in the prairie's. I also always loved the Anne of Green gables movies.

I would 2nd or 3rd or 4th??? the Janette Oke series. They also show this series on the Hallmark Channel, which, I shamelessly watch each & every time they are on. I simply tell hubby "Go away, leave me alone, the 'Prairies Movies' are on." He understands to a degree...Cause there are some downright good showdowns that any farm guy can appreciate.

We have loved the Little House series, the Betsy Tacy series, and the Anne of Green Gables series.
There are books written about Caroline (Laura Ingalls's mother) and Martha (her grandmother) that are good but not as good as Little House.
Caddie Woodlawn was great.

I loved the book Year of Jubilo by Ruth Sawyer when I was a kid but it is unfortunately out of print and not available at most libraries. Ruth Sawyer also wrote Roller Skates.
A cute book is The Wheel on the School which takes place in Holland.
I loved Glory in the Flower (by Norma Johnston) and the sequel The Keeping Days - also very difficult to find nowdays...what a shame...I dont' know what happened to my copies.
I will try to think of others in that genre. |

| P.S. For adult readers who love to read about farm life, a favorite of mine is Little Heathens by Ruth Armstrong Kalish. I reread it every year....it is really well written and just gives a great perspective on life, work, and what is *really* important in life.....(hint: not money). :) |

I have Little Heathens and it is a great book! I would recommended it to anyone who wants to read a great, honest story about farm life. :)

If you love the Little House series, there are plenty of Biographies of Laura's real life that are very interesting. William Anderson has done Biographies on Laura. There is also a book that I have that not only tells of the politics and the news of those times, but also some of the "behind the scene", if you will, things that took place with Laura's family that was never mentioned in the series. I believe the name of it is Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Woman Behind the Little House Series. I don't have the book at my finger tips and will get back to you with the name of the book and the author.

You'd probably like "The journal of Callie Wade" by Dawn Miller. It's written in journal style. Here's a brief description: An old-fashioned debut novel told in a series of journal entries and letters written in the unpretentious, homespun language one would expect of an 18-year-old Missouri farm girl recording her experiences on a wagon train in 1859. There's also a sequel to it, called "Letters to Callie: Jack Wade's story."
Dawn Miller has been compared to Laura Ingalls Wilder, too! She has another prairie/pioneer series out called "The journals of Callie McGregor" and it has two titles, Promiseland (#1) and The other side of Jordan (#2). Here's the summary for Promiseland: Hope and endurance grew alongside the wildflowers of the untamed west---and in the heart of a young pioneer woman who's determined to survive the Indian massacres, prairie wildfires, and harsh weather of the Montana Territory.
Another great author is Jane Kirkpatrick, and you'd probably like the Kinship and Courage series: All together in one place (#1), No eye can see (#2) and What once we loved (#3). Here's the summary for All together in one place: a heart warming story about ordinary folks who faced their fears and buried their uncertainties to make the perilous journey to Oregon.
