Do you know any young farmers/apprentices who may wish to farm in Minnesota?
I continue to receive sad and desperate phone calls from an old farming woman, Myrtle, who has 77 acres, wooded, good water and a beautiful barn in Minnesota, who is being approached by developers. She lives, however, in the Seattle area now, near one of our PCC stores.
She wants the farm to stay in production, but is old and wants some young farmer to step in and hopefully work out a purchase agreement.
She contacted me because of the PCC Farmland Trust. I've sent this already to The American Farmland Trust, since it has a program in Dakota County, Minnesota to purchase development rights. She's right on the line with that county.

We moved from Minnesota two years ago. The Dakota County is just south of the Twin Cities. It is considered an urban county and very devloped on the north end. That would explain developers on her doorsteps. Many farms have left because the taxes are very high and the property is very valuable. On the south end it is very close to Northfield a town with two colleges(St. Olaf and Carleton.) Please advise Myrtle to be careful of someone claiming they'll farm it and then sell it developers. This area is one of the fastest growing areas everyone wants to be there ---and probably commute to the Twin Cities. Does anyone knew the nearest town? JoAnn

I do believe that by having The American Farmland Trust, Dakota County, Minnesota, purchase development rights (as was stated in her email), then that will preserve the land into the distant future as being undeveloped. There are many farmland trusts that do just this, to be certain that farmland remains farmland. There would also most likely be tax credits and/or incentives that would benefit the owner of the land.
Sounds like a perfect place for a CSA to me, especially if you've got customers so close.

I LOVED Minnesota when I lived there years ago! Gosh what an awesome opportunity for someone! I dream of having a CSA..not much chance here...but what a great place that would be for it!
