My hubby wants to buy a new refrigerator--yay! Now the question is, what type?

Do you all have suggestions?

There's the freezer on top, freezer on bottom, the side-by-side. We are a family of 6, so I am figuring on needing roughly 25 cubic feet.

Then there's brand of refrigerators--what type is a good one?

Any help would be appreciated!

Well with six of you the only suggestion I have is make sure you get the textured door not the smooth finish, those little hands can leave a lot of prints.

Rebecca,
I had a frig on top and loved it. I have a side by side and really HATE it
I can't fit much in either side.
I'll be getting a new frig in the next couple years, it will be either a top frige or Tri door style.
just my two cents

I agree with PP. In my opinion (we all know about those Tehehe) The fridge on the top is the only way to go. I saw a new one the other day that had a great drawer freezer on the bottom and the top had double doors. I want it really bad.

We have a side by side and it is okay. My mom and dad have a fridge top freezer bottom and I love it. The fridge top fits casseoles and pizzas and stuff so much easier. Not sure about how convenient the freezer access is though.

I don't like side by sides either! My milk fridge in the garage is one..and it is fine for that. My kitchen fridge is an older one with freezer on top. I sure do prefer it to be on the bottom though..much much much more convenient. I had one like that years ago and LOVED it!

Thanks for the input.

I have always thought the same thing, but didn't really trust my instincts.

Now, do you guys have the icemaker? Or water dispensers?

What brands are good?

I covet..well almost covet, the freezer on the bottom fridges. Mine now is just the normal fridge on top, no frills, bought it at Costco deal. I like the idea of ice and water in the door, but my mom has one, and the little kids are ALWAYS playing with it! Check to see if they have a lock or on/off switch, especially if you have wood or pergo floors. It sure would be nice to have filter water and ice available, huh.
Good luck.

I like Karen and Valerie love a freezer on bottom. That is what I grew up with. I currently have a 20+ year old side by side. It just keeps purring along. I can't wait to get one that has the double doors uptop and freezer drawer below. I've seen the freezer below with a door and can tell you I'd rather bend over then squat with my very punished knees in my younger days. Here's my question to you when you decide on which one to purchase. What part of the refrigerator do you open the most? If you keep this in mind you will pick the freezer on bottom. The other suggestion I would make is to tell the salesman/woman to put some weight in the freezer on the bottom and then see how the drawer slides. Some manufacturers have better slides. Believe me I so want one, I've tested the slides. It also is very important to balance what you put in a drawer type freezer on bottom so as not to put stress on the slides.

I love my side by side it is a really big one 26 cubic It easily holds 6 gallons of milk or juice on the door plus other stuff. It is a Maytag.I love the water ice dispenser with a filter. I was looking for the largest frig space and didn't care how big the freexer was because we have a full up right freezer in the kitchen I did a lot of research and this was the biggest frig space I could find for any type.
Ours is a year old so this model is still being sold if you are interested

When I can afford to get a new refridgerator it will be one of those tri-door ones WITH an ice maker and it will be HUGE. I don't really care about water in the door but I just love an ice maker. I used to have a freezer in the bottom type fridge and I loved it. When I found out that they make them now with the side by side type doors on the top... WOW. Some day.

We have the freezer on the bottom and I love it. Makes so much more sense. If I were buying one now, I'd go for the one with the freezer drawer on the bottom and the two doors on top. Mine's just too new to be thinking about replacing. I think I have another 20 or so years on it! Good luck.

We got a Jenn Air. It was a special order that the people never came to pick up. It was originaly $2400. We got it for $1200!!! It's kind of small. But, it has the french doors. Water is inside. Icemaker is in the bottom. The bottom freezer is the pull-out kind. It's black textured and it has brushed silver handles. It's awesome. It was exactly right for us. My mother-in-law was the one who found it, but she thought we wouldn't like it! Ha! We love it.

Hooray! I did not realize Jenn Air makes refrigerators. I have a wJenn Air wall oven and separate range top. The wall oven is small; I wish it were bigger but it has worked out for 21 years and our next house will be needing a full size oven/range so I won't have a choice there. Let me know how you like the bottom freezer vs. top freezer; I am so used to the top freezer I don't know whether or not to change when we buy our next 'fridge.

Have fun filling it up with groceries and goodies! Are you happy with the rest of your new house?

Jo

So far I'm loving it. Like I said, ours is small, probably about 20 cubic feet, I'm not real sure of the size. But, I have a small freezer that is kept in the garage anyway. I love the bottom drawer. No more digging through to see what I have. It's all within easy reach.

It is strange to have to open the door to get your filtered water, but the fridge is so pretty I guess I won't complain!

You can do a Consumer Reports search and find out.

We have had freezer on top and side by side.

I like how the side by side keeps freezer contents more organized, but I also agree the frige sides aren't very big.

I'm kind of neutral about water/ice despensers too. Never had one 'till recently. The side by side we have now is a Kenmoore. It came by way of the Habitat Thrift Store and we only paid 300 for a unit that retails for 1000 dollars!

Well, I wish all fridges lasted 20 years! They don't seem to any more! I've been married 8 years, and we have went through about as many fridges! Mainly Maytag and Whirlpool! I went through two before I got married! lol haha My parents on the other hand had only 2 the whole time I grew up! Since I've been married they are on their 3rd one! (so now they have had 5! all together!) What's up with the new fridges?

I've been coveting these, but I sure don't have the money to buy a new one of THESE every year.....I would do good to buy a new one every 20 years, but I have no idea if they are a good brand or not-

I've had a side-by-side all my married life (22years) and I don't love it. Likewise with the water/ice dispenser. I NEVER use the water dispenser since we drink filtered water, and the ice dispense is only good for a glass at a time. When I'm making ice tea, the acces inside the freezer for the ice maker is too small to access accept with your hand, so you have to fill the pitcher up, cup by cup, from the door ice dispenser. My dream refridgerator is the french door Jenn Air. No access on the door, just a simple ice maker that you access when you slide open the bottom freezer. Simple, useful, elegant.
