Yes, I found out that some of the neighbors have been feeding the foxes around here. No wonder I keep seeing them. I don't think it's a good idea--the foxes need to establish their own territories, plus I heard they may prey on the cats that are around here. The woodchucks have already disappeared. They're beautiful animals, but they really don't belong in town.

I know most everywhere it is illegal to feed wildlife, and in most areas, fox carry rabies, so you are taking a huge chance doing so, I would check to local laws and maybe leave an unsigned letter in their mail regarding your concerns, and the laws and health dangers...

I, sadly, wind up feeding the foxes around here my chickens! But i do not know of anyone who would actually feed foxes. That would be nothing but trouble!

If they want to feed a fox so badly there probably isnt anything stopping them from buying a pet fox. (Depending on state) Sheesh.

Carol--I've thought of getting some hens but not if there are foxes around.
Jen--I don't think they want a pet fox, I think it's just the novelty of having a "wild" animal in an urban setting. Maybe they feel it connects them to nature--but not necessarily in a good way. If there were bears around, would they be feeding them? I think not!

Mostly my hens are safe, they have a secure yard and coop. It's when they are out and about that the fox gets them, one or two a year

When I moved here the folks who had this house feed the foxes on my front deck. It took two years to convince them that they could not be here and to find another feeding grounds. Now some 15 years later we still have foxes but my great pry's, my three llamas, and some very mean billies have convinced them to say far away from my sweet animals. All I can say is it is not wise to feed wild things - they can also turn on humans and yes even foxes have been known to bite humans. Another point is if a wild thing get use to getting food from humans they might run into a human with a shot gun and then they have given their life for the silliness of a human...Ever body losses in the end.
