I hope you get some responses. I am trying to locate a local farmer to obtain wool to spin with. I have not been successful. I did however, find a group that holds one spinning class once a year in March. I hope to participate in it next year.

Looking for a spinning wheel as well. Does anyone have one for sale or to barter with?

Hello Ladies,

I too started learning to use a drop spindle and hope one day to have an actual spinning wheel too. I found some spinning instructions on how to scour wool fibers, and carding on www.youtube.com. I also have been able to pick up a couple of DVD's on the subject both online and through www.thewoolery.com. The Woolery also has spindles, spinning wheels, fibers, etc. that you can buy. I am also going to try and join our local weaving guild here in the Columbus Ohio area to try and learn more from the ladies there. There is a magazine called Spinoff that is for spinners and I usually get it at Barnes and Nobles or you can get it through www.interweave.com which also has a daily spinning page on there as well that you can join for free. Hope this helps. Looking forward to learning and sharing with both of you.

I went to my first spinning group yesterday. Had a BLAST! This is so much fun and rewarding. Can not wait for the next meeting together next month. I finished my first skein of yarn today. Know I need to now what to do next with it. Do I soak it in warm water before balling it up?

Are you planning to use it as a single or did you ply it? If you are going to use it as a single ply yarn, then you skein it on a knitty noddy - tie the skein in several places. Then soak the skein in warm soapy water (at least this is what I have always done). Pour off the water and gently squeeze out the excess, soak in clear water to remove any soap. Roll skein in a clean towel to remove excess water - hang or lay out flat to dry. I hope that helps. If you plan to ply the yarn - ply before removing from the bobbins. Congrats on your new wheel. It's loads of fun!

Blessings, Sheri

I soak mine for just a few minutes - it is mainly to remove any residual dirt and to set the twist. The main thing when working with wool is not to shock it. Make sure your wash is the same temp as your rinse. What felts wool is temp shock and movement. Good luck!

/Deb sounds like you are on your way to a great hobby! I totally enjoy the whole process. From sheep to yarn! Sorry don't have a swift to barter for. I either have my husband hold the skein of yarn or just sit it on my lap and wrap into a ball. My ma has a swift and a ball winder. I sometimes use them, and they are handy. I model my knitted items to my sheep telling them thank you! :)

Debra I checked out your wheel and yarn! You are doing great. Have you knit anything yet? That is a great feeling too. Making something you can wear with your yarn you made! And you got a niddy noddy in trade! I have a homemade niddy noddy I got in a drop spindle class I took. It is small but works. You can measure one wrap , and then you will be able to add up how much yarn you have in your skein. Check out some books from the library and you can get lots of ideas for spinning different yarns. You are lucky to be able to go to a spinning group!
happy spinning

I checked out the pics of your wheel & yarn. You are doing a great job for a beginner! Glad to see you were able to barter for a niddy noddy! Like Michele said measure how much yarn one circle is and then count when you are skeining and then you will know your yardage. This is a good video on how to use a niddy noddy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6JN6dUvRaU

I don't have a bag pattern, but you can go on ravelry, they have lots of patterns. You do have to join, and it takes a day or two, but well worth it. Doesn't cost anything either. they have pattern for sale and for free. There are alot of websites with free patterns too.
Have fun working with your own yarn!

brown with blue tints in his fibers. Just beautiful..
Has any of you ladies been to a fiber frolic?
Have a great day in the Lord!! Heading off to Sunday School and Church Service. Deb

Deb, do you save the rabbit fur then every time you brush them. Or do you actually have to clip a rabbit? Sounds like fun!
I have been doing alittle spinning again. Did up 2 skeins for a gift. Once haying is done I will get this years wool cleaned, and hopefully get it all carded. I do have some Japenese Indigo seed started. Need to get them transplanted. You dye with the leaves, and it turns the wool blue. I can't wait to see if it works for me.
