Doug and I had a beautiful weekend going to our hometown for his brother's wedding. He married a wonderful woman that is sweet, kind, energetic and sassy. Nora was the flower girl and had tons of fun. I will post some pictures later.
However I have been experiencing major life burnout lately. I have been trying to manage it but have just been barely coping.
So yesterday Doug took care of Nora and I ran away to our cabin in the mountains for about 6 hours. It was great. I did a little cleaning- watched some Grey's Anatomy on my Iphone, ate WAY too many potato chips and just enjoyed some solitude. It was amazing and I can't wait to do it again.

That sounds like a wonderful get-away. We all need to take time to recharge our batteries once in a while.

That does sound great! When ever I would get burnout I would fantasize about running away and staying in a motel for about a week. Never did that but I did fix up on of our spare rooms like I visualized the motel room to look like and I would slip in there every now and then and read a magazine or knit. Just someplace different for a little peace always helps. Hope you can take your mini escape when ever you feel the need.

What a lovely way to get away! I don't have a vacation home, so I get up very early in the morning (4-5am) and just spend some alone time in my sewing room. Did have to tell DH a few weeks ago, " I just need some alone time tonight." He was so understanding..

Ahh- boy can I relate to this post! Sometimes I think at 45 I am going through my midlife crisis. It all started towards the end of last year. It was a rough 2010 for me, having lost my dear grandfather to cancer in January and then having my father diagnosed with cancer in April only to loose him 4 months later in August. Whew-my life was a whirlwind, as I became my fathers caregiver, travelling back and forth to Boston for medical treatments etc. All this while trying to maintain my own family household with 2 young children ages 10 and 12. Needless to say when the dust settled I was left feeling like I wanted to run away (with my family in tow). Honestly I still feel that way. I guess you could say that losing 2 close family members within 7 months of each other really put life in perspective for me. I came to realize and appreciate what really matters in life, which for most people in their busy day to day lives is easy to forget. From my sorrow came the blessing of being able to really appreciate the little things in life. My only problem now is that if it were up to me, I would move to a small cabin in the woods, with my family, in the middle of nowhere and live simply. I would escape the hustle and bustle of this suburban life we lead and just "be". As of now I cant convince hubby to think the same way. The deaths of my father and grandfather has opened my eyes to so much. I long for a "vacation" home where I can find solitude and the simpler life. For now I try and grow where I am planted and take note of the beauty around me....for example- the other morning while driving my kids to school a woodpecker flew right past us and landed on a tree and began "tap tap tap". Funny as it may seem, I smiled, and something so simple just made my day.
Alee- your post about escaping to your cabin in the woods just sounded so divine to me, I had to comment.
Thanks to all for sharing what it is that you do to "recconnect" to who you are.

Thanks ladies! I really appreciate the support. The family cabin is a love of mine. We starte building it when I was 4 years old and only this year got running water. We have to haul water from a well to a buried cistern. If I want to rough it I still can, but now we have the option. It's great seeing up there... no matter how much things change- they stay the same. I am thinking I need to plan a cabin Sunday every month just to keep my sanity. Especially when it gets to be this winter and I can go up there- light a fire and just EXIST. It will be wonderful.

Alee,
Sounds like a wonderful weekend. The hubby and I went to our cabin this weekend. Lately we haven't been spending much "relax" time there. It's more like mowing the lawn, tending to the garden, we put a new roof on, and replaced some windows this summer. This past Sunday the hubby, our dog, and myself went up there, ate lunch ,then ended up taking a nap on our separate couches (even the dog). It's soooo quite there, if you sit in a comfy chair for over 3 minutes......it happens - you fall asleep. The winter time is especially that way when it's snowy outside and the wood/coal stove is cranked up! Hope you get to enjoy your cabin more often!
