Hi Ladies!! We've always used minced garlic from the jar for cooking up until I grew my first batch of garlic this year. So, I'm looking for tips and tricks for getting those homegrown cloves peeled. How do you peel your garlic?

This works great for me: Lay a single clove of garlic on a cutting board then lay a large chopping knife on it's side on top of the clove and give it a good whack with your hand. This semi-smashes the clove and it should slip out of the broken skin easily. For a paste: chop garlic and sprinkle with kosher salt, then "smear" with the edge of your chopping knife a few times. The salt breaks down the garlic and creates a moist minced paste. - Be sure to adjust salt in your recipe.

Good Luck!

Yep, what Seana says. Do it constantly. Another way to always have peeled garlic on hand is to roast the whole bulb in the oven then the cloves pop right out of peels and you can put them in a small mason jar with a little olive oil and in the fridge. Voila!

I love garlic i use it in almost everything. I also do the whacking. And i also (if i dont want the juices to run out) then i just cut the root end off and the peeling comes right off and the bulb is still whole and then i mince it up. Works everytime.

I am loving fall and all the wonderful colors and of course my Hot Tub!!!!!

It looks like I do what youall do. The side of the knife thing. I also roast garlic and save it in a small jar in frig.for garlic bread or toadd to a dish I am making. Its very yummy roasted. LOVE ROASTED GARLIC! When chopping garlic, use a sharp knife or food processor.

Appreciate the little things, for they are not really that little.

Thank you all for your tips about peeling garlic. I have quite a lot from this summer to practice on. It won't be long and it will be time to plant more. I'm going to expand my garlic garden next year, so I can give away more garlic to friends and family, and maybe try some other varieties.

I learned a trick from a Jamie Oliver show once....When using a hand garlic press just put the clove in with the skin still on and press...it still presses out nicely and comes out of the press quite cleanly.

I use the same side knife whacking method. Works every time. Glad you got so much garlic. Keep up the good work.

I do have to chime in...

I whack whole cloves, or slice the end to remove it if I want to do a bunch of cloves without digging the skins out of the garlic press - my favorite garlic press is the one made by Pampered Chef - it has a cleaning tool! It's a worthwhile investment piece that you'll use for years. I've had mine for over a dozen years!
