Well since I was let go from my job of 3 yrs on Sept 2nd I have been trying to decide what to do. Well I had an interview at a Tech School and didnt get the job. So I asked my DH if he wanted me to go to another school that is 70 miles round trip....He said he would rather me try to start a business closer to home. So I found a small (600sq ft) space to open a hair and nail salon. The start-up would be about $3,000.00. We have the money and I have 2 other people that want to rent a station and that would pay for the space and utilities. It really needs alot of cosmetic fixing up which my DH says is not bad. And the landlord says he will give me the first months rent free. So I think we are going to do it....

Good luck! My daughter jusi started her own salon also. She loves it! We had mostly painting to do & it was ready. Now she wants to add tanning beds so thinking about putting up a wall!!

Karla that is great...Hope she does really well. The place ai am getting is only 600sq ft. so I can have 3 other stations besides mine. It will be a great little place but it is alot of cosmetic work to do..It will take about a month to get open.

Hi Deborah,
Congrats on starting your own business!! What a wonderful landlord too.
If all it needs is cosmetic work, your way ahead of the game. A little paint can go a long way until your ready to jump in with other options. Your main focus is to get it up and running so your getting paying customers coming through the doors. . . who knows, maybe you can barter with some gentleman to spruce up the place for you in exchange for free services totaling the same for his wife. . . no out of pocket expenses for you while getting started and a great "pay-back plan" with easy payments!!

Wishing you much success with your new business!!!

PS: What are you going to name your new endeavor??

Well we got the keys to the space and my DH and I went to Home Depot and got the supplies to start fixing the place up. Our neighbors are going to help. He use to teach construction and she is wonderful with interior decorating. My DH has a background in faux finishes and we are doing something wonderful on the wall that is concrete blocks. My DH idea of course. My expertise will be when all is done...But I will be helping as well...I am so excited..Thanks ladies for all your well wishes. I will keep everyone up dated. My DH is going to take before middle and after pics to post...

Thanks for all the congrats ladies. The place is coming along. We are still doing painting and i had several people to do bids on cleaning the floor, it needas to be stripped and a good coat of wax. And then for the signs and lettering on the door and windows. I have saves some money on both. Always pays to look for the best deal. Then after all that we should have everything done before Thanksgiving. Because I want to open on the 28th of November. i am sure I can. State board has to come and give the ok to open before clients can start coming.
Thanks

Well I am almost finished with the Salon. Signs done, painting, floors, bathroom, ceiling tiles, and the equipment is in. Now what is left is the heat and the supplies. Then just to wait for State Board to come and inspect. Then I will open. I am so greatful for my dearest neighbors and my dear husband. We have put in a lot of time and it is finally going to be done by this weekend. Now only thing is to have people to come and rent stations.

Good luck with the salon & I love the name-you can do a lot as far as logos go by using the highway sign motif.
