Back in March I went to a skin cancer place because of a few spots I was concerned about. They were pre cancerous, I was told. She zapped them. So I had to make an appointment for the lady I take care of and made an appt. for me too. The doctor zapped alot of spots on my arms and hands. Also a bigger spot on my left cheek and on my nose. He just told me I need to stay out of the sun as much as possible and to wear long sleeves and sunscreen and a hat when I am outside. It's SO hard to do that for me. But now I am a little more concerned about it.
My mother has been having several cancerous spots removed from her arms and on her neck the past few years. They are skin cancer but the not so bad kind. Can't remember the name. She just went last month back to Savannah to have her neck cut into again. This time they got it all and she is fine. But she has had to use the chemo cream a few times. She is now wearing long sleeves all the time. She's almost 80 so is a little colder now. I am 53 and stay hot most of the time.
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you farmgirls are going through anything like this. Do you find it hard to put on sunscreen or a hat when you go outside? How do you deal with it?

So sorry to hear that!!! I don't have cancer, but do not use sunscreen or a hat and know that I should. We really should do what is best and stay safe.

I haven't gone in and had mine looked at yet but I have a couple I'm concerned about. I'm one of those who burns after only 15 minutes in the sun. What's really bad for me is I get my scalp sunburnt where my hair is parted and I hate putting sunscreen on freshly washed hair! So I'm trying the long sleeve, hat, gloves etc route. It's not fun and on some days, darn hot! But sunscreen slathered on is hot too, I don't think your skin can breathe under all that goo and I worry about some of the ingredients. It's lovely to be fair skinned...

Kris, I'm so sorry to hear this. Yes, most of my family has had some kind of cancer. My dad, grandma, Great aunt and great grandmother all developed skin cancers. I burn if I even go out for a few minutes with out a hat. It's so hard to wear long sleeve shirts when it's 100 outside. I usually wear sunblock and dash from shady patch to shady patch!
I love my fair skin, but it sure can be a big pain in the tootie to take care of!
But do take care of yourself and keep covered and slathered in sunscreen!

It was nice out today. No sun at all most of the day. SO I was happy about that. What's so wierd is that now people are getting sick from lack of vitamin D from no sun exposure. And the people that work 3rd shift that never see the sun are having problems too.So what's a person to do? And I worry about all the ingredients in the sunscreen too. So I guess the best thing to do is wear long sleeves and a hat and just go out in the morning and evening. I don't know. I do know that skin cancer can kill. So you all with the fair skin, be careful! Protect yourself when you go out.

So it turns out that little wart may have been a good thing. I would never have taken Mrs. T to the skin doctor because I have never noticed that particular spot on her cheek. But because of the wart he saw that spot and did the biopsy and it came back as Bail Cell skin cancer. If you are going to have skin cancer that would be the one to have. Because it's like the least of them. I have no idea how long she has had it. So they will do a surgery next Monday afternoon. They said to plan on being there several hours. ANd of course at 94 she is a bit scared.
If anyone has any suspicious spots you need to go get them checked out soon. You never know what it could be and it's better to be safe than sorry later.

Hi, everybody, I just happened on this thread as i was browsing through the different subjects. I had melanoma. You do not want that. I now wear a hat, put on sunscreen, wear long sleeves. People love my hats. I was lucky. I had a very bad cancer in a very bad place. When the results came back, the surgeon cleared his schedule and did surgery that very afternoon. If melanoma gets into your bones there is usually not a happy ending. They got mine in time. I was lucky. Going on three years. I also have had 2 basel cell carcinomas. Wear the hat. It could save your life. There are lots of sunscreens out there, try them all till you find one you like. Put sunscreen on your children. Even some of the lotions have sunscreen added now. I take a prescription Vitamin D. I spray my feet and legs with a sunscreen spray and use the more expensive ones on my hands and face. I do not go out in the middle of the day. Inconvenient? Yes. but not nearly as inconvenient as chemo or worse.
Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.

Glenda, I am so glad they found the cancer in time and got it all. That is so scary. You are right though. But it seems everything I do is out in the sun. I do have some hats. But I noticed my feet have spots and bumps. I just take things for granted I guess. A friend had a spot on the top of her foot that had to be taken off. So it can happen all over.
Mrs. T is doing good. She gets the stitches out this next Wed. The doctor got it all on the first try.

something else that we don't think of--driving in the car! my spots on my face are where the sun gets in the window inj that lil area above my glasses along my hairline.....

Hi farmgirls,
I lost my dad to melanoma just about 7 years ago. It was ugly. Wear the sunscreen -- especially on cloudy days, more UV gets through on those days. I have moisturizer that has SPF 15 and frankly, I use it 24 hours a day. The days I "go out in the sun" I up it to a 55 SPF, but I have read that there really is nothing that protects above about 30 SPF.
Try the Neutrogena dry touch sunscreen. It is pretty comfy. But, use something. The sunscreen helps with preventing wrinkles, don't forget.

Yep, my hubby has been driving a truck for about 18 years. And he hangs his left arm out the window all the time. It's covered with the white scaly spots. I keep telling him to qwear his long sleeve shirts. And I have noticed that when I am driving, the sun is always on my arms. I cannot hide them anywhere to get them away from the sun while in the car. My friend got me some Oil Od Olay wirth 15 SPF in it. I don't really like using that but it does have the sunscreen so I do.
Marianne, I am so sorry you lost your dad to this. It;s nothing to mess around with for sure.
