This is the year I reach retirement age and start my "new" life. We, my husband and I, live in a small town in eastern CT only 5 miles from RI.

While trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life I discovered that I find the most peace going back to the things I did during the early years, when my children were babies and during the years while they were growing up. A backyard garden, sewing, needlework, crafts.... all the things I had put away while trying to start a career. Fortunately, my husband loves the idea and has helped me to create a new sewing/craft room in our attic space. We are putting the finishing touches to it now and I can't wait to finally use my space.

I had been visiting here at MaryJane's Farmgirl for several months and having finally become a member I look forward to "meeting" new sisters and creating new relationships.

Hi Kathleen and welcome from Appleton, Wisconsin! Isn't it wonderful to be able to do the things that give such a a sense of satisfaction and comfort? I enjoy dabbling in many kinds of crafts from jewelry making to crochet and painting. I have one grandson 2 yrs of age who keeps me busy 2 to 3 days a week babysitting him but he's such a joy to me. I'm married (2nd time) and have 2 grown sons. I know you'll enjoy being here at MJF's forum. Such a bunch of wonderful gals here. All helpful and you'll learn lots. Enjoy!

Thank you for the warm welcome Cheryl!

You are so right about being able to do those things we've always loved and have provided us with such good feelings. Like yourself and many others, I learned to do so many artsy/crafty things over the years. My grandmother taught me many of the needle-arts when I was very young, crochet, knitting, tatting, spider-lace, quilting, etc. Then I learned to draw and paint, do gardening, canning and preserving, and the list goes on.

My husband is also my second (and by far the better). I have 3 grown daughters who have blessed us with 9 1/2 grandchildren and 1 great-grand-daughter. The "1/2" is due for Thanksgiving and my daughter doesn't want to know boy or girl in advance. She has 3 beautiful little boys and I think she is secretly hoping for a little girl. All the grandchildren are boys, except 1.

Nothing feels quite as good as seeing those little ones come running with open arms, all excited and full of hugs and kisses when they see grandma and grandpa.

Warm welcomes always provide such a high-point to our day, and yours has set the tone for the remainder of my day.

Thank you Cheryl.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Kathleen,
Connecticut is such a long way away . . . maybe someday I can visit there.

Hi Kathleen and Welcome from you neighbor here on Long Island, NY! SO glad you have joined the sisterhood- you will absolutely love it here- as I'm sure you've already figured out there are so many wonderful girls here. Always there to offer advice and share stories- even though we are on the "computer" it is a very warm and welcoming feeling logging on here! I have 2 children who are now both in middle school. My daughter who is 11 now truly enjoys alot of "being a farmgirl" with me, such as tending our chickens, working in the garden and canning. I am sure once my kids are "grown" I too will take up many more things that interest me (as time allows!)
Welcome again!
Smiles,

~Laurie

Thank you CJ and Laurie for your warm welcomes! Someday I plan to get to Colorado, I hope it will be soon. It is sooo far away but it is on our travel list. Nick and I have been trying to visit every state and are more than half-way to our goal.

It is amazing, Colorado is so far, yet Long Island is only a few hours away and I have never been there either! At which end of the island do you live?

I miss the days when my girls were little and learning homey things from me. Treasure these days with your daughter Laurie, lots of photos to treasure. I blinked and my little girls suddenly became women in their thirties with mostly grown children of their own.

Best to all of you. Much joy and happy days for all.

Merci Madame ! C'est un plaisir rencontrant de nouveaux amis ici à MJ' ; s. (Thank you Madame! It is a pleasure meeting new friends here at MJ's.)
I have visited Cajun country and loved it. The people, the food, everything about southern LA beckons me to return for another visit. I was raised French-Canadian, my french has gotten rusty and I have been trying to re-learn it.

Jusqu'à plus tard (until later)

Hello Kimberly.

Although I was born and raised here in the U.S., I was raised in a French Canadian household. My grand-mother was very proud of her heritage and never let us forget we were French-Canadian from Quebec, in spite of location of our birth. So happy to meet you!

Hi Kathleen!
I live just about smack in the middle of Long Island on the south shore. We are basically half way between Montauk and Manhattan. Very fortunate to have so much to see/do and enjoy so close to home. Live on 3/4 acre. Have a few hens for fresh eggs, and enjoy my gardens both veggie and flower! We love Ct and RI- have been to both states many times (such an easy ferry ride over!)
Enjoy exploring the farm!
Smiles,

~Laurie

I have been a member here such a short time and am loving it! Everyone is so nice and friendly and the talk is everywhere is such fun. What a party we could have with everyone were in the same location at the same time!

Laurie, your LI home sounds perfect. What a great location. We always thought we were in a good spot being mid-way between NYC and Boston, even VT is close enough to go for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. We live in a tiny town, pop 3,000, on nearly 1/2 acre. I planted a small garden (very small) this year using 6 bags of moisture control potting soil. (too much to eat, not enough to put up) We didn't have time or energy to amend the soil of the yard for regular garden. I am hoping to plant a raised bed garden next year and am researching raising a few chickens and maybe a goat and would appreciate any advice.

Maybe this is the year I take that ferry and explore LI at long last.

{{{{hugs right back at you Penny}}}}} Thanks for the welcome and the invitation. I have visited the "50" forum and enjoyed the "talk". Although I know no one there, the chat felt so familiar. I will be visiting often. We have been to Savannah, absolutely loved it and can't wait to return for a longer visit.

Warm hugs to all!

Hi Sarah ... It's great to hear from someone so nearby, (sort of). It would be wonderful to meet up one day. In which part of the start are you located? I get as far as the King Arthur store at least once a year.

Hi NixKat, from a fellow CT resident! You will love it here! Your sewing room sounds lovely...you should post a pic when you get it all ready.

Hope to "see" you around!

Sarah....... sounds like a plan to me. :)

I used to buy my flour in large bags too, but nowadays its just Nick and me, so a little goes a long way now.
