I'm growing basil and sage on my balcony and the heat is burning them, they're turning yellow, but then we're also having massive rains and the plants are drowning. Should I bring them inside to the air conditioned apartment or will I surely kill them then?

Eleanor -- it sounds like they are too wet. From my experience herbs love heat -- but I don't come from a real hot climate. I would move them undercover so they can dry out but still get the light needed. You might even try repotting them with fresh soil and lots of perlite so the soil drains well.

Lori -- glad to know that about basil. I am basil impaired!!! Everyone that I plant just sits there. Missy planted hers at the same time and the plants are so big she's giving basil away. Guess I just need to be patient.

I would think they are turning yellow from too much water. Basil loves the heat and sunshine as does sage (think sage growing in the Wild West and basil growing in hot & sunny Tuscany) - but neither of them will do well with too much water. Also, as was mentioned, with all that rain, any nutrients have probably washed out of the soil, so some nice fertilizer should help. I like to use fish emuslsion, and then you can dilute it a little more for the pots. I've grown basil and sage in pots, so keep trying. Good luck! Judy

You're all so right, I was giving the basil too much water, as soon as I stopped watering it, the color came back. I love basil, it's one of my favorite scents, this one is cinnamon basil, I hope it lasts a long time.
