So, if you read my Horse Camping in OR post, here is an addendum.
I want to go back up there tomorrow for a few days and ride the trails we lost and flag them. It is bow season here. I'm not worried about riding with bow hunters out and about.
My concern is my choice of camping spot. If I camp at Windigo Pass, I will automatically cut 14 miles off each ride. But hunters camp up there. Not sure that I want to camp alone, other than horse and dog, where there may be quite a few hunters. I will have either my pistol or my rifle with me. My trailer has a semi-living quarters with locking doors. Oh, yeah, this spot is free.
Choice two is to camp back down at Kelsay Valley Horse Camp. This, of course, adds 14 miles to any ride. It is an established horse camp. There is a camp host. I will most likely get a site with a corral instead of highlining. Other horse people will be in camp. Camp sites are $10 a night.
Keep in mind that I do not mind camping or riding by myself, with or without a firearm. It's the other people that worry me.
I'm leaving tomorrow if my husband doesn't take the trailer for his pack trip around the Three Sisters. If that happens, I'm definately going to Kelsay as I will be tent camping.
Any thoughts?

| I don't know anything about the local culture in Oregon...do hunters tend to be dangerous/obnoxious people out there? What would the issues be if you camped near them? |

| I'd probably go with the horse camp. I'm the same way about camping, it's not being alone out in the woods that bothers me, it's the people that concern me. I've run into a few guys while hiking that have made the hairs on my arms stand up. More than likely the hunters would be nice folks, but just in case, I think I'd go the safe route. |

I'm like you, doing things like that by myself never bothers me...How do you REALLY feel about both. I really believe if you have even a little reservation about the Windigo Pass, then I believe that you should choose the camp. I believe we all have a sixth sense about stuff...Which ever you decide please be careful...and take your gun..lol

I agree! If you have any reservation for any reason about camping with hunters, I would pay the money and thoroughly enjoy the extra miles! ;)

I left before I was able to read any of your posts.
There was one other camp up there. I don't know if they were hunters or not. They had children with them part of the weekend. I kept to myself.
I met several PCT thru-hikers and was able to give some of them water from my trailer. That section of the PCT has no water for close to 20 miles. A trail angel maintains a large stash of water and some food there at the pass. Anyway, it was fun to talk to them. One guy was from Australia. Another one was from CO. I guess they were at this section this late because of the tremendous snowfall in the mountains.
It was so nice to almost finish my ride and not have to ride the extra 14 miles. And I got the trail flagged that we lost the week before. Woo-hoo!

Oh, and one other thing. I tried MJ's quinoa meals from her Outpost book. By Sunday night, I just couldn't handle one more meal. The first couple of meals were good. I enjoyed the different spice mixes. And I really liked the milk/sucanat breakfast mix. I had some fresh peaches that I diced up and added. I also added them to the dinner mixes. Kind of like sweet and sour. I am going to add the mixes to rice. I think I'll add the breakfast mix to 7-grain cereal.
I couldn't find dried molasses here. Have any of you used it?
And I really like the nut/dried fruit mixes. I had never tried goji berries and I think they were my favorite. I have brought the nut mixes to work since I don't eat breakfast. I know, I know. And I wash them down with diet soda!
I hope it's okay to post this. I don't want to criticize MJ. I was hoping that this would be a good alternative to freeze-dried food for packing in. I guess just my personal taste.
