when was the last time you had company for dinner? when is the next time you're having company for dinner? what did you or are you gonna' serve?
we have some neighbors coming for dinner tonight .. i know it is HOT .. but i'm gonna' make a 'killer meatloaf' recipe that i found in one of my two most favorite cookbooks .. and scalloped 'taters and blue cornbread (ha! without the BLUE CORN .. couldn't find any down in these hills!) .. and a buncha' baked veggies .. think i'll do baked apples with real whipped cream for dessert.
i'll type out some of these recipes (all from my MARLBORO cookbooks .. google e-bay for them .. they are FABULOUS .. and the PHOTOS alone are worth what you will pay for these books! xo

I think the last time we had company over for dinner was last spring... hmmm, that's too long... I did a buffet with lots of appetizers - my basil garlic bread, veggies and dips, portabella and eggplant kebobs, grilled meats, salads, and chips and salsa.
I want to do my favorite christmas tradition - in Virginia, esp. in the Tidewater area, there is an old colonial tradition called "Open House". During the period between Christmas and New Years (sometimes the period is extended too) everyone has an open house event and serves some sort of a buffet - some are meals, some are just desserts and coffee, but you have an open house and invite your friends to "drop by" during a certain time of the day, and everyone gets in their cars and travels from one place to another... If it's done right, everyone has theirs at a different time or day and it provides for a week or two of entertainment for the lonely colonials.

The last time we had someone over for an actual meal (friends are over all the time) it was my husbands boss and he wanted a true Cuban meal. So I made huge steaks, black beans, rice, tostones, and tomato, avacodo, and lettuce salad with salt, oil, and vinegar. For drinks there was Malta, water or juice. But for dessert, since the guy was from the south I had pecan pie for him at the end!
For my last girl thing, I had a chicken ring, cheese and crackers, olives and baby carrots with dip, five cup fruit salad, and raspberry danish with ice tea, sodas, juices and water for drinking.
Our next guest are supposed to come in two weekends for a Bar B Q..haven't figured out a menu yet!
Hugz and yes would love to see that killer meat loaf recipe!!!

Oh Buttercup..the cuban food sounds so good!!! WE have family over for dinner quite often. Last time was Sunday and we had Enchiladas and a big green salad. My sis in law brought brownies for dessert. Alot of times we barbque. I like to do Shoyu chicken and rice for company too..easy and I can make alot just as easy as a little. I am due to have a girl party though.Seems like I do that alot more in the fall and winter..once the kids are back in school..and I tend to do either a salad bar type thing or chicken wraps alot. Our birthday season in our family is coming soon..we have so many birthdays between Sept 21 and Oct 31 it is unreal (3 of the 6 of us still at home and lots of cousins and neices and nephews( both of my daughters will want theme type parties (I LOVE to do that) so that will be some fun girly food. My Mom, second son who is 26, My brother, my sis and her husband and 8 year old neice will be here at the end of Sept and we will have a big birthday party the night they are here for all the birthdays and then they are going on a hunting trip to I think Wyoming for a week and leaving my little niece here...so we will have lots of girl fun. Then they will stop on the way back to CAlif again and leave me meat for the freezer and pick up th neice and visit again. So I need to plan fun meals for them too. I really like having company over alot.

Thanks Jenny!...my twins B-day is Sept 21! Then my oldest boy is Sept 28! Sounds like we may be throwing a party around the same time!!
And yes I love having people over for food and conversation too!! It is wonderful! Hugz!!

oh yummmmmmm .. sounds so good! last night we had our neighbors over for dinner on our big back porch .. i made a killer meatloaf using a combination of beef, pork and veal ... scalloped potatoes with onions, mushrooms, red, green and yellow peppers and lotsa' cheese! I made a nice tomato, cucumber, clery, carrot, TART apple salad with a lemon/olive oil dressing .. green beans that a friend of mine had canned and gifted to me .. they only needed some butter. cheesy-salsa rolls and in one of my CLAY BAKERS (i LOVE baking in clay .. everything is so MOIST!) ... i baked fresh blueberries from our blueberry bush, diced apple, fresh peaches and bananas with some brown sugar and topped it with real whipped cream. our friends brought the yummiest appetizer .. fresh eggplant from their garden .. simply sauteed in butter with a little soy sauce .. oh so delicious! we sat on the porch just talking until midnight when a huge thunder and lightening storm started brewing!
i've never been much of a cook .. but as we get settled into cabin creek farm .. i realize .. it just takes time and patience (ha! and following directions!) xo
have a tea party planned for sunday (little girl's birthday) .. then in a couple weeks .. i have 20 or 30 lady friends coming for a pot luck picnic. not sure what i'm going to fix for that yet! xo

Sounds so yummie Frannie!!! And I would love to go to a tea party!!! And potlucks can be wonderful...so many things to try! So many cooks!! yummm!! Hugz!

We had my mother over for dinner last night to celabrate our son's 18th birthday. He's so excited! His birthday money is going to be to attend a gun show next weekend without his Dad and purchase his first shotgun or rifle for hunting this fall. I so hope he will choose a rifle and put some venison in the freezer this coming season. Both DS and DH as well as DS's best buddies are getting so excited about the upcoming season. DH always takes DS's buddies quail hunting two to three times during the season.
On the menu as ordered by DS....geez wish we had done the normal boiled shrimp for birthday dinners.
Hot dogs rolled in croissant dough with shredded cheese and baked Fresh Green Beens Tomato slices with Taragon Vinegar and topped with shredded fresh Basil Strawberry Chocolate Cheesecake Cup Cakes - decorated with a fishing theme, using Gold Fish and Pretzel sticks for the decoration.
So nice to have simple and quick meal.
