So sad to report our little container garden just flopped with all the bizzare weather we had...plus sandy soil I did not prep enough . We are getting some tomatoes...maybe a few dozen at the most. MANY of them split as they were growing. Our beans had a mystery munhcer! Some days we would get a few handfuls and other days...nothing! Cucumbers...if we get 2 dozen total.
Oh well, I am not too upset since all in all, I only spent about $50 on everything--including extra dirt. But I am sad we did not get enough to even put up a few jars...or make pickles!
We are planning on building a raised bed with chicken wire as a base to help keep the gophers out!
I have heard of many crops not doing well with all the humidity, rain...up here in NEPA that is just not a good combo. Plus we had hail...about a month ago I saw one poor small farm lost all they planted because of hail. Looked like someone shot everything up with a machine gun. So sad. I feel for those that rely heavily on their produce.
Hope others did WAY better than I did...

| Donna, Nothing did good this year for me, We had so much rain in March and then extreme heat and no rain! The Horn Worms got my Tomatoes in my rasied bed. I was too hot and Tired and Weak to fight them this year! I had a few Herbs do well in pots on the Patio. I have MS,so had to give up major Gardens, I do Patio Pots and a Raised Bed by the Patio that I can water by the Light of the Moon! Ha! I have done well in the past, with Bell peppers and lettuce and cabbage and Tomoatoes in the raised bed and peppers in pots. There in always next Spring!! |

Lucky for me, One of our customers at the Salon where I work part-time, had a garden and brought in Cucumbers and Okra. She said hers did not do well this year either! I made the Refridgerator Pickles with Onions and they were great! and easy!

We didn't do as well as other years either. Planted twice as many beans this year and have only harvested as much as when we planted less so far. They simply would not set fruit when it was so hot. They seem to be picking up again so maybe we will be able to play catch up till frost. The tomatoes suffered in the heat and humidity. Leaf spot has just about decimated them. We have harvested some for canning but cutting out the spots is a pain. The cherokee purples have faired a bit better so we have had plenty of table tomatoes. The asparagus bed is already brown and crispy. It is usually still a little green till frost. I'll bet next years harvest will be less because of it. Sigh. The herbs have grown and done well except the thyme. I think it got a fungus from the humidity. Since we don't use chemicals fungus always gets the upper hand. I use all the natural remedies/preventers but it is usually only a matter of time. We didn't plant as many things this year because we were not back here on the farm till mid july when we moved back after the construction. Looks like that was a blessing after all.

Man do I ever understand this...this year no tomatoes from my plants due to rains since April....but the patio cherry tomatoes gave me a few....summer squash only got 2...herbs grew out of control to point they were too big & bitter...have yet to see what the potatoes did...will let the ground dry out a bit...but I have a feeling they will be few as well....Very weird year but I am so thankful I am not one who has to depend on the garden to get thur the year like others & farmers...they have had such a hard time this year....but I also read the Farmers almanic so i knew it was going to be rough spring/summer here...I depend on that mag every year to let me know what i need to do....plus with hubby in Afghanistan didn't feel I needed a huge garden...just for me & the chickens this year but they only got a bit of lettuce & lambs quarters before it all drowned....just got the new 2012 farmers almanic so hopefully next year will be better, if not I at least know & can hopefully work with it...Michele'

My five stalks of corn produced ! I repeat 1 ear of corn......my tomato plants are producing some tomatoes----I had 2 yellow squash, and some green beans.... a very poor outcome this year. Next year I hope it goes better.
Can't even blame it on neglect.
