Does anyone have one? What do you think? I have read mostly good reviews concerning them and was wondering what my friends here think.

I was checking out this:

I have 3 steam canners, and 2 pressure canners, could not live without any of them, they always have been part of my life...

Just a word from someone who took a canning class put on by the local extension office. The usda says that steam canners are the leading cause of botulism in home canned products in which a canner was used.

The leading overall cause of botulism is from the old method of dippin the jars into boiling water and then turning upside down to heat the lids to try to seal them.

I don't have one, nor have I known anyone directly who used one. I am simply passing on the information I was given in the class I took. Please don't think I am trying to put anyone down who uses one. I believe how you feed you family is a personal choice that must be made by each person.

I hope the information helps!

I second the information given by natesgirl. The steam does not get hot enough to penetrate the food in the jars all of the way through. Please consider using either the water bath method or a pressure canner. It is not worth the risk.

I have 2 steamer canners & 2 pressure canners. We (family with 7 kids & 7 grands) have used them for 29 + years now and successfully canned all our "water bath" jars with the steamer canner. Never has any of us gotten sick and I have full confidence in using them.

I agree with Angela, it's all a matter of personal choice.
