Have any of you harvested 'free range' (growing wild) Chicory and then roasted it, ground it & brewed it for chicory coffee?

No, I havent although I have much wanted to try that. I think there is a product on the supermarket shelves that has roasted chicory in it...cant remember...but Ive tried that and it is good.
In MD where I was born that chicory grows everywhere. However unless its in a soil filled with sand or rocks, its like impossible to dig those roots. The soil compacts there indescribably.
Now I live in FLA I think I shall try growing it here in the sandy soil.
I am starting to think of a future barter/trade with you...
Maybe your lavender stems for my chicory roots?
We'll see!!
Do you have very many cat friends?
I thought Happiness is being a MOM for the first time when I became a MOMMY in November 2009. How long have you been thinking happiness is being a Kat Mom? I think thats awesome...and TRUE!

Hey Kat Mom
Ive been on the lookout for chicory... it seems to me I saw some since I got to FLA...but cant remember where. Ive collected seeds from plants before cos I was interested in growing the chicory like endive....? Im glad you posted that reminds me where I started this gardening obsession...if I recall it was bc of trying to get after some chicory roots for a coffee substitute!
Unfortunately we didnt even get a storm out of that hurricane!
When I was a little girl storms scared me so much, now I rather love them. Weird.
Have a great day!

I've wanted to harvest chicory and there's tons of it here in Indiana but it's always along the roadsides which is not a good place to harvest much of anything, especially root crops.

Connie!
I too suffer from 'brainfartittist' with out my morning coffee... lol!

I luv Matt & trust me, he is not alone when it comes to demolishing kittymint or kittynip.....
My lil peekaboo goes wonkers in the garden with it... I had to plant 2 plants because she would totally brake (from rolling all over it) the poor plants down... now we have it coming up all over the place as well as in the garden... whodda thunk it.. my kitty is a 'polinator'...lol!

I so agree with you Patty... not crazy about roadside anything..... the thought of ingesting carbonminoxide does not make me a happy camper!
yuck!
I was at the market today and searched the coffee isle/shelves and not a single can of or anything remotely close to Chicory Coffee...and yet I know I have seen it on store shelves....oh wait....when I am NOT looking for or need something,,there is plenty of it everyewhere... but when I do need/trying to find something....Nadda, bupkis, nothing! go figure! :>#

Oh Katmom, Ill look for that chicory coffee too, its been years since I had that
Cat picture is wonderful...I once had a cat who ate the entire small plant I bought at the supermarket for him...he left nothing but the little stalk and the dirt and the pot...
We had moved from MD where it grew in the fields surrounding us, and I guess he missed it that much
As I said the chicory grows everywhere you dont want it to in Md as well and its a pain for everyone bc when you cut that stalk its really tough and to dig them out is even more work...
I can use the roadside plants for seed gathering...I think thats acceptable use for roadside plants
Take care all, hope the weather is always fair to us all
