8/29/2011 3:01:00 AM Valerie Sue Palmer
Valerie Sue Palmer, 54, of Harbor Springs, Mich., formerly of Stephenson, Mich., passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011 in Houghton, Mich. Valerie was born to Lois and the late George Palmer October 15, 1956 in Menominee, Mich. Val grew up in the Stephenson area graduating from Stephenson High School class of 1974. Val continued her education at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn. for one year and then went on to Eastern Michigan University graduating with a BA in Recreation and a minor in Environmental Science. Val worked for many years as an Activity Director in a skilled care facility. Val was an active and involved member of a Church in each community where she resided. She had a deep faith in her Lord and lived her life that way. She put the interests of others before her own, and gave without expecting anything in return. She was a volunteer at the Manna Food Pantry. Survivors include her mother, Lois Palmer of Marinette, Wis.; two sisters: Denise (Dave) McDowell of Harbor Springs, Mich. and Barb (Steve) Engle of Oakdale, Minn.; niece, Sarah (Matt) Black, and numerous cousins. Visitation will be held Monday, August 29, 2011, at the Carney Evangelical Free Church in Carney, Mich. from 1 p.m. until the Faith Service at 4 p.m. Rev. Gary Page and Rev. Robert Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Stephenson Township Cemetery. Anderson Diehm Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. **************************************** Missing woman's body found by Ty Czarnopis Posted: 08.25.2011 at 6:09 AM

HOUGHTON - The search for a missing woman continues in the Copper Country today.
Valerie Sue Palmer, 55, who was visiting friends in the area, was last seen near the Wells Fargo Bank on College Avenue in Houghton around 7 p.m. Saturday. About 9:30 a.m. Sunday, a boat was found on Torch Bay with her belongings inside.
At the time of her disappearance, Palmer was wearing aqua-colored capri pants, a white-and-yellow tank top and a broad-rimmed visor. She is 5 feet, 8 inches, weighs 145 pounds and has white, shoulder-length hair, hazel eyes, and was wearing glasses.
Palmer is reported to have also suffered emotional setbacks.
Assisting the Houghton Police Department in the search are the U.S. Coast Guard, the Houghton County Sheriff's Department and Superior Search and Rescue.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Houghton Police Department at 482-2121 or the Houghton County Sheriff's Department at 482-0055.
Prayers please...
UPDATE-----
Here is a link to a news report from Channel Six in Marquette, Mi.
http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/news/story.aspx?id=654914
Still no news-They dispatched two airplanes today to help search along an area called Torch Lake where they found the boat. It's now day three and it just does not look good. It's raining here right now and we are feeling pretty low. My MIL spent some time with Val's mother today and we are told she is bearing up. Just bad business all around. Thank you dear farmgirl sisters for your continued prayers. I will keep you posted when we hear anything further.

Oh Melody--I'm so sorry--I know the Torch Lake area so well, having gone to school at Interlochen and vacationing at Torch. I just hope for the best--I'm sure everyone in the family is just on pins and needles and fears the worst. I'm thinking of all of you!

So sad. I've been thinking of her and your family all weekend. I'm sure her mother is just devastated. Such a rich life, such a dedicated soul--I hope she has finally found peace, Melody.

Oh Mel, I'm so sorry. My heart aches for your family. 6 weeks ago, we lost my FIL unexpectedly. It's a terrible shock. I will ne praying for your whole family. So glad to see she was saved, and serving the Lord. Please take comfort everyday in that. May God send peace and comfort to those left behind, missing her. (((Hugs)))
The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.
