Hubby is in KY at our small farm getting things ready for us while I'm closing up our IN house and preparing for the sale and move. I just spoke to him and discussed growing wheat for flour and corn for meal. We have 39+ acres, 14 of which are open field. Have any of you found that growing your own grains worth the effort? We just want enough for our use, not for selling.
We are real novices but want to live a sustainable life. Any suggestions, horror stories or triumphs would be appreciated. My grandparents were farmers in PA and NY but that was ages ago and their experiences were never shared with me. I'm going to have to rely on our local extension agents, the internet and my Farmgirl Sisterhood for tips.

Hello! Congratulations on your new adventure! MY great grandfather grew wheat and as I understand back in 1899-1900 time frame he would sell it to buy rice, sugar nuts and other things they needed. He had 100 acres so I suppose this means that growing grains can be a wise use of land. He was able to support a family of 12 on in North Dakota, also, you'll get delicious freshly ground wheat that really is superior to bought flour. Good luck and Best wishes!
