                      | Last week, a friend happened to ask if my garden had been hit by the squash borer this year. I'd never heard of this, but I remembered that my zucchini plants last year withered up and died within a day or two last summer. So I followed her out to her garden and took a look at what she was talking about. Basically, all the info is here: http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/M1209.html

The next day, I went out to look at my zucchini plants and everything looked fine. Day after that...BAM! They were wilting all over the place, and the stems were turning into mealy pulp. I took a kitchen knife and operated, as described in the website. I killed several extremely disgusting white larvae who'd eaten up about 6 inches into the stems. And the vines seem to be perking up...so far so good. I may get a few more zucchini out of the garden before they succumb to having their stems split open.

I never would have known what was happening to my vines if my friend hadn't told me. So I'm putting it up here in hopes that it will help someone else!
