I was pulling weeds (that #*$&@#$^ hairy galinsoga which is everywhere, and some redroot pigweed) last night and uncovered one of my cabbages- it was completely gone... in its place was a black slimy leaf.
There are two little green buds sticking out from the brown fibrous stem.
The question is, do I pull - and burn - the remains of the plant because it is a disease -- or do I leave it in place so the buds grow into little heads?
I found this web site http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/ which has a lot of photos of plant diseases but I didn't see anything like my problem posted there. Probably because nobody lets theirs get to the point that mine did - the weather has been really hot and humid here and I know cabbages like cool weather. Could that have something to do with it?
I would get it out of there to be on the safe side. I missed out on cabbage too..didn't have many growing, but wanted to make saurkraut this year. May still see if I can get some at a farm stand and do it. I had grasshoppers eat big old holes in mine and I noticed too late. My broccoli right next to it was left alone though...go figure. The chickens happily feasted on the remains of the 6 or7 heads of destroyed cabbage. I guess that is a good thing...they were so happy!! And it has been way too hot here for cabbage this year anyhow. Darn though.
I think its probably rotted from bugs - especially if it was hidden by weeds. I would keep it clear of weeds and let them grow. I like eating those little cabbages. I cut them when they get to be the size of a baseball, cut them in half and cook them in boiling water, add some salt and a little butter - they are pretty good. Cabbages like alot of water, but need that clear breathing air around the plant. That's my opinion.
