This morning I have had 2 phone calls. One for eggs and another for a bushel of tomatoes. And I have both. I can actually provide produce, eggs, dairy products and meat and live animals for people. How cool is that? I will never be rich on just 3 acres, but I am in my heart. It makes me feels so good to know that I have things people need and want. And it is good food too. A very good feeling.
Are there others here that actually make a living on their farms? I would love to hear about it.

That is awesome Kris!!!
I sure won't make a living on my farmette...no milk to sell this year and I barter with my eggs and some produce and sometimes wool (which still helps feed my family so I like that!) Someday maybe more than that..you never know!

If what you sell/trade/barter helps pay the feed bill, gives you food for your table, and in the end after everything is added up, you just break even, you are a farmer...

I think your name should represent where you live so when people see your "rand they will know that living and working the landin the city is possible. So, something like Urban Acre Farm or "Grows in the Dessert" Nothing fancy or pretty but something to make a point and a little educating too.

I sell a few rabbits and eggs, but hope to get my asparagus bed big enough to sell asparagus(I have about 100 plants now that are 3 years old), also I hope to sell raspberries and strawberries someday, but I still work out of the house. We raise a few cows and our herd is now 3 cows and a steer(Ribs). We have been eating our own beef for many years.
I can't think of anything I would like better than to be earning money growing and selling :)

Oh my mouth is watering for those tomatoes - With all the hail and storms no one around me have tomatoes left. I did not even try this year after all I was hit with. First year since I can remember that I will not have homegrown tomatoes... Good luck with the "Farming Business"... I am green with envy - wait those are my weeds...

On the raspberry note...I remember picking buckets & buckets of raspberries & giving them away for free! Now the kids are charging $15/pail (4L ice cream pail) for them! How crazy is that?! I think it's ridiculous, really. We weren't allowed to charge anything for them, but all the people who got pails either ended up making jam for us or making something else at some other time for us.

Holly, my farm name is Outback Farm. We are so far away from every where here.
Vicki, the asparagus sounds like a good food to sell. I like it fresh. And I have never seen it here at any farmer's market. I have a cow and calf too. I raise all our meat. And I just recently go 3 Katahdin ewes to be my foundation flock to raise lamb for meat. And I am going to be getting meat chickens soon to sell.
Grace, you have had a hard summer. That's so strange to hear of so much hail. I wish I could send you some tomatoes. And Alee, too. Has it been like this all over your area?
Pam, that is one thing I really don't like. I know they are so good for you but the seeds are so big. Like blackberries. Don't like to eat them either. But I can see why they would be so expensive. And that was really nice of y'all to give them away. At least you got good things in return.

My DH and I live on 2 1/2 acres in Northern Nevada. It's mostly dirt at this point. The kids are finally grown and now we can concentrate on what we want to do. We have a small garden, but I have to say where do you start? I think our first livestock will be chickens and have talked about a dairy cow. Sometimes I get really overwhelmed. Did you always farm? And if not where did you start?

I think this is just in my blood. I love it. I don't really know where it came from. My husband and I have always had gardens and animals. 7 years ago we bought this place and have been going at it ever since. I think I will always do this, some way or another. We have 3 acres and a neighbor lets me keep my cow and calf on his pasture next door to help keep it mowed down. We've dpne alot here but it needs so much more. I started out here with chickens and goats. Then gradually got sheep and sold them. Then a few calves. Now I have turkeys and more sheep and more goats and a cow and her calf. You just have to see what works for you.
