July has been wet, wet, wet. I am ready for the fall. I love when I feel the first cool weather coming in.

I too am ready for fall...it to takes me back to a sweeter, happy, gentle time of my youth..my mind, heart n soul fade back to the smell of burning leaves, grandma raking her yard in her cotton house dress n her black granny shoes..no jeans for grandma...but I bet she would have liked them...the scents of cinnamon n brown sugar..you can bet she was baking cinnamon rolls for when I got home from school...n we would share a cup of tea too,,she always had her tea from a cup like an ear of corn..(Shawnee collectors item today)..we would practice together..cursive writing n gettin my lessons done...then there would be pork chops..taters n cream gravy with fresh snapped green beans n bacon..in the works for supper when my mama got home from workin at the telephone office...and the crisp fresh air, as the sun was going down..and the owl whooting softly in the tree...oh the feather bed felt so wonderful as I drifted off to sleep...if only the young could experience a bit of sweet gentle grandma love...the world would surely be a better place today...ummhuh...I am ready for fall...Blessings farm girls everywhere..Blessings...Nana Shirl

Winnie, Mama and I were in Blue Ridge in Feb. she wanted to go for her birthday. We use to pick apples at someones house we discoved years ago. They only had a sign in their front yard advertising u-pick apples, I don't know if they are still there, they were out from Dawsonville on Hwy 9. I talked to mama and she is ready to go! Looks like she and I will be making a trip up in Sept. Brad (hubby) and I like to go to Dillard, there is good fishing for him and lots of waterfalls for me. I love to hike to the base of waterfalls and sit and enjoy the beauty. Oh, just thinking about makes me want to leave today! Thanks for the idea, can't wait until Sept now!

I love fall. Even when I lived in southern California I looked forward to it, what few days we had that felt fall like! Since I've lived in North Idaho I love it even more. I love the smell of fall in the woods, canning peaches (I get my peaches in mid-September), picking apples, hunting season (mostly for the walks in the woods), and our anniversary is in October, so we usually go on a camping trip or other vacation in the fall. I really love Yellowstone that time of year, too. I just wish we had a little more summer this year, it got a late start. I'm a little worried about my tomatoes.

Oh, Donna - this post and your picture brought a smile to my face and a leap to my heart! Autumn is my FAVORITE time of year, too! I'm with all of you girls! Right now, I've got five plumply round, brightly orange-colored - and I mean ORANGE - pumpkins out there in my garden, and every day I look at them and think "PIE!" I know I have to wait to pick them, but it's killing me to wait! I'm dreaming of apples and cider, pumpkin pies and muffins, cinnamon coffee, and woody smoke from the chimneys wafting through the crisp autumn air... Bring on the bulky sweater weather, and shine up those boots, girls - my heart is already there!!! :) Hugs - Nini

Tina- You know Dawsonville is where Burt's Pumpkin Patch Farm is located. They sell hundreds of pumpkins that they grow-all sizes and shapes plus all of the other fall things to go with it! Look up their website if you and your Mom want to take a side trip from one of the apple orchards. Twice I have visited Burts and brought home to Florida one of those HUGE pumpkins for a fabulous yard display with hay and mums etc. The trick? Getting up off the ground into the wheelbarrow and then into the back of the car. They are heavy but worth the effort for months of fabulous decorating. Your house will be the envy of the neighborhood!! By the way, they are available in early Sept. to buy so check it out on your trip.

Tina- I think we have started a FarmGirls southern movement to go Appl Pickin in September!!!! Ok FarmGirls, who else wants to join in the fun? WE can take pictures and then post them here on the MJF site to share our fun. We might not be together in person but we will all be together in spirit as we select bushels of apples to tote home and then turn into yummy fall recipes. By the way, Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge list Ginger Gold apples on their website as ready and available to purchase. The apple fun is on and the apples are getting ripe and waiting for us to get on up the road.

Are there any others getting the apple pickin spirit besides Tina and me? Let us know! Tina, tell you Mom for me she is a trooper to go along with our dreams and fun! My Mom would have been right there with us too as she was always up for a trip. And each fall she made homemade applesauce to die for!!
