I still have a half bushel of apples, and more on the four trees to pick.
Do Yellow Transparents make good applesauce? Can I freeze apple slices (easy in a zip lock bag), or do I have to can a la Aunt Jennie's apple pie filling recipe?
Yellow Transparents make the BEST applesauce. As far as I'm concerned there is no better apple for it. If you just freeze the apple slices, they will turn brown. It's better to make the apple filling and freeze that or can like Aunt Jennie. Yellow Transparents aren't the best pie apple as they tend to fall apart when cooked hence why they are so great for applesauce.
Mine are almost ripe. My poor little tree is 8 years old and looks like a two year old tree. It has been deer damaged, sheep damaged and I think is now just sorta stunted. It is in the middle of my back yard and is a sweet little tree...has quite a few on it this year and I am excited for them to ripen..maybe a week more and they will be ready. They make awesome applesauce! They do it without even mashing up like yellow delicious or others...like Sheri said...they fall apart..not great for pies more of an applesauce pie. I have done it. For pie filling I tend to use yellow delicious or granny smith or braeburns. I need to plant more apple trees this year!
